Weird Word Wrap in Threads

Mid morning yesterday, in the middle of a session, word wrapping disappeared from my thread views. Each paragraph was a single line. Lots of horizontal scrolling.

Today, there is word wrap, but the table cell containing the thread text is about 133% of my screen width.

I am using NS 4.61, 1024x768, Large Fonts. (1024x768 w/ large fonts gives you fonts the size of 800x600, but graphics and other screen elements at the higher resolution.)

Better have a look at your system - nothing has changed here.

After first reboot, went from no wrap to 133% of screen wrap. After second reboot, stopped altogether. Working fine now. Weird!

Was this in the VBA forum?

If long lines of code occur within "pre" tags, they cause the problem you describe.

There were 2 posts in the VBA forum yesterday in one thread which I edited to split lines. When I do that, I do put a comment in to say what I've done. If you were viewing the thread when I changed them, that would cause the "fixing" of the sympton you described.

    Nah, Geoff,

Seems it was just my browser loosing it a bit and needing a rest (or is that reset?). The stuff that wasn't wrapping was plain ol' proportional type. The wierdest part was that after the first reboot (for other reasons) it went from no wrap to the horizontal scroll button taking up 2/3 of the width (meaning the page was 1 1/3 the width of the screen). Then on the third reboot (caused by exploring my Zip drive) everything in the forum went back to normal.

I've found that I like windows better if I consider this stuff an adventure rather than an anoyance. In comparison the Linux machine I use at work is rather boring (I last booted 12/27/2000 and the reason was because I installed a TrueType font server, not a crash.) <g>

Re: Weird Word Wrap in Threads

    (later)

I had a divil of a job this morning submitting #28085 (the INI file question)

I composed the reply with my usual 140-character wide lines of procedure code, did a preview, did the underscore-thing (sorry, "did the underscore_thing) and posted.

Lines were still too wide, went back, did more underscore-thing, previewed, looked OK, posted.

Drat! Lines were still too wide!

I suspect that the Preview window is not accurately reflecting the final visible width. I'm using a 1024x768 display. It wouldn't surprise me to find that the Preview window allocates (say) 80-characters width but the forum Display window allocates only 72.

I will try to catch this behavious in detail next time around.

While I think of it, it would be nice if the composition window (in which I am now typing) could be made the same size as the Preview window and the Posting window. Maybe if all three were the same size, most of our wrap-problems would be eased, since we could see as we typed that we were overflowed.

You'd missed one, that's why! I've fixed it.

    'MsgBox intRemoveKey("d:20010330 script2k.ini", "series", "series",<font color=red>_ </font color=red>
    "numseries", 3)

Go into the Display section of your Profile and adjust the width of the meassage box to suit your taste.

    Thanks.

Thanks again. I've bumped it up to 78. I'll try to find the setting that equates it to the post window, so that if I see soemthing wrap in the edit wondow I'll know for sure it will cause problems in the post window.

Re: Weird Word Wrap in Threads

I just posted "lngLoadList" in the VB/VBA forum and had good reason to post a reply to my own post.

    Here's my observation:

The Preview window is 11.8" wide on my monitor. I can see the green border at both sides. Everything looks good. I click on "Post".

Ta-da! Horrible overlap on the RHS!!!!!

I believe that the root of the problem is that the Preview window does not take into account the column to the left when the message is actually displayed. That column contains "Chris Greaves 4-star lounger" or similar, and takes up about 1.5", which 1.5" is no longer available for the post, so - the post disappears off to the right-hand side.

This is why I've been posting, previewing, looks-OKing, having to re-edit (must've missed a line), previewing, looks-OKing, posting, having to re-edit (must've missed a line), previewing, looks-OKing, posting, having to re-edit (must've missed a line), previewing, looks-OKing, posting, having to re-edit (must've missed a line), previewing, looks-OKing, posting, etc.

can you (Eileen) please consider making the Preview window narrower by the same width of that column to the left of a post?
