Not Read Flags

Eileen: Have you been screwing around with the Not Read Flags again?

I am again seeing some strange things happeningd. For example, I just started up IE 5.5 and connected to the Lounge. The Excel forum showed that there were 2 new messages. I went into the forum index, and none of the folders had the little red triangle to indicate that there were unread messages, and none of the threads had the red "NEW" next to the number of messages. I opened the top message in the index, and it if fact did have one message flagged as unread. I then went to the second thread, and it had no messages marked as unread, and the last message posted was one that I posted on my last visit.

I then went back to the Main Index, and the Word forum showed 6 new messages. I went to the forum index, and the top eleven threads all had red triangles. Threads 1-6, and 9-10 showed new messages. Things like this have been going on since at least yesterday.

>>They just go doolally<<

Is this a technical term? I searched on Whatis.com and got no hits.

She has got to be another displaced Southerner. I understood that perfectly without even thinking about it.

Dare I suggest not-quite-right page cache updating by your browser?
It's only an idea, but do tell if I'm way off beam.
************************************************** **

doolally, a. slang (orig. Services').
[Spoken form of Deolali (Marashtra, India) + tap n.4]
In full doolally tap. Characterized by an unbalanced state of mind.
1925 Fraser & Gibbons Soldier & Sailor Words 75 Deolali tap (otherwise doolally tap), mad, off one's head. Old Army.
1936 J. Curtis Gilt Kid vii. 76 What's the matter with that bloke? Doolally?
Ibid. xviii. 181 _What's up with you for Christ's sake, kid? Come doolally tap?' Scaley was getting worried._ His pal seemed to have gone mad.
1936 F. Richards Old-Soldier Sahib iv. 74 Time-expired men sent to Deolalie from their different units might have to wait for months before a troop-ship fetched them home._ The well-known saying among soldiers when speaking of a man who does queer things, _Oh, he's got the Doo-lally tap,' originated, I think, in the peculiar way men behaved owing to the boredom of that camp.
1943 Hunt & Pringle Service Slang 28 Doolally, very drunk or temporarily insane, without distinction.

Just thought I'd show off a bit. The last usage seems appropriate

Re: Not Read Flags

I use IE 5.5 at the office and Netscape 4.75 at home, and the not read flags are all over this thread, which I did read at the office.

Re: Not Read Flags

In case this might help:

At work I use IE5.5 with a LAN/WAN connection to a 64Kb ISDN gateway, can get techie info from propeller-head if you need it.

At home I use Netscape4.5 with a 56Kb dial-up.

Could it be a proxy problem, although I've tried a forced refresh with no change? (Hive to admit I thought it was just me.)

Re: Not Read Flags

Silly me.

Forgot to say that the flags do not indicate the true situation at work but ,so far from home they are correct. (maybe co-incidence?)

BTW I wanted to edit the original post by the Forum tells me I'm not able to.

Jumping about between machines and browsers will do it every time.

Re: Not Read Flags

I've noticed the problem as well...but not using Netscape.

I'm using IE 5.5 at work, and I believe IE 5.01 (could be earlier) at home. Home is fine, work gets all screwy
