    ODBC

MS made a design change in Office 2K that precludes ODBC from opening a third party dBase file for merging in Word if any other user has the file open. (Excel lets you open it read-only, but Word just won't open it.) There is no such restriction in Office 97. Since we use a Word to do medical documentation and correspondence it is super handy to directly draw patient data from our Medical Database, and Office 97 does it without a hitch. But no go in Office 2000 in the networked environment. Does anyone know what would happen if I installed Data Access components from the Office 97 CD on a machine running Word2000? If it doesn't present too big a problem it would sure help us out. Reference Q238431 and Q251208 in Microsoft KB. Our Medical Database uses the Borland BDE so their official solution doesn't seem to work.

I haven't seen this particular problem but, just as a thought, did you try setting the Excel workbook as shared?
