    invalid page fault

A friend's system was infected with W39.MAGISTR.39921@MM He used Norton AV to detect and get rid of the virus. The process involved "repairing" several files including WINDOWS.EXE. Now when he starts his system he gets the following error message - WINDOWS CAUSED AN INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE WINDOWS.EXE AT 017F:004021D7 Clicking on OK allows the system to continue and start up and run just fine. Should Windows 98 SE be reinstalled? What else can be done?

    Re: invalid page fault

    Hi Trebor:
I have Win98SE & don't have a windows.exe. You might have your friend rename it to windows.nonexe & see what happens.

    Trebor, further to Phil's information....

WINDOWS.EXE is a virus/worm. It's not part of Windows itself. The computer has been infected with a worm, and several of them use this trick to hide themselves. Use MSCONFIG (Start - Run - MSCONFIG) and remove anything in the Startup tab that references this file. Delete the sucker while you're at it. Renaming would work - but it won't remove the worm, and you absolutely must get rid of it.

Here's a pre-defined Google search to help you get more information: http://www.google.com/search?num=20&hl=en&...te:symantec.com

    Good luck!
