Standard Toolbar Buttons Disappear (Word 97)

I have had problems with some users losing their standard toolbar buttons while working in Word 97. They have to do a complete reboot to bring the standard toolbar back to normal. The machines are running Windows 95. I have attached a screenshot of what it looks like-The red line is where the buttons should be. If you have any ideas as to why this happens or a solution I would greatly appreciate it.

It might be a problem with Normal.dot or with the Data key in the registry.
1.
Close Word.
Start Windows Explorer. Note: you must display extensions for known file types!
Search for Normal.dot. In a standard installation, it is in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates. Rename Normal.dot to for instance Normal.old.
Now, start Word and see if the problem occurs.
If it does, the problem is not in Normal.dot. Close Word. A new Normal.dot may have appeared. If so, delete it. Rename the old version back to Normal.dot.
If the problem is solved, you're done.

Close Word.
From Start/Run..., open Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice8.0WordDat a.
First, delete the Toolbars value in the right hand pane.
Start Word and see if the problem is solved.
If not, close Word, and now delete the entire Data key.
Note: before you do this, see <post#=148410>post 148410</post#> for a more elaborate description and some neat tips on this subject.

Re: Standard Toolbar Buttons Disappear (Word 97)

Okay I have tried replacing the normal.dot and deleting the registry entries and it is still happening. We have a normal.dot that has been customized that we load on all of our PCs from the network so I am wondering if maybe that one is in some way corrupted, but you would think that this would be happening to more than 2 out of 150 users if that was the case. With one user it happens while she is working in Word with merge documents connected to an Access 97 database-this user has to completely reboot to get the toobar back. With the other user it started happening after she logged into another users PC and then went back to hers(she does not work in a database)-this user can just close out of Word and get the toolbar back. Any other ideas????? Thanks!

Hi Paige:
When you say you replaced normal.dot, are you talking about a single template that you force on users or do each of them have their own normal.dot to customize? You would be better off putting a standardized template in the startup folder & letting users have their own normal.dot.

You might also take a look to see if there are any add-ins that are affecting this behavior by removing everything from both Office & Word startup folders. Have these users with problems created any macros, toolbars, etc? But I imagine that you checked to see if they are loading a different toolbar than the one they should have.

We have a normal.dot template that was created before I started that carries with it a specific toolbar for the users to use. We replace the normal on the PC with it. They can still make any modifications of their own to this normal.dot also though. We do not stop them from doing that. What I have done now is renamed the normal.dot that we were using to replace the original normal.dot with and put it in the startup like you suggested and set up the normal.dot as the original. Maybe this will work?

Thanks!

Hi Paige:
I probably wasn't clear. I don't think you should put a normal.dot file in the startup folder at all. Instead of having your template called normal.dot, create a new template & call it something else. Put it in the startup folder. It will then be available to everyone. Let every have their own normal.dot (not in the startup folder). It would also be better to create your own toolbar & put whatever buttons that you wish, rather than adding buttons to existing toolbars.

I'm also wondering if there is a conflict on those affected machines with anything installed locally or if there is some other software or hardware display problem. But I don't have any ideas in that area.

Do the PC's where this happens have less memory than the others, or do you users have many applications open at once? The problems might be caused by Windows running low on resources. There are some tools in Win95 to monitor memory use, free resources etc., but I don't remember what they were called (should be under Accessories somewhere).

We ended up ghosting one machine this past Friday to see if that works and so far it has.

The PCs have the same amount of memory as all other users and they are not running too much more than everybody else here runs at once. Usually Outlook and Word together with maybe AIM(except for the user using access-she has this running also). Thanks for all your help!
