Scanner yellowing

UMAX scanner on NT 4 SP6a (I don't think that will matter). Scanning black and white no problem. Scanning in color yellow fades from the color (even if it is text). Updated drivers with no result. The yellow fading seems to be getting gradually worse. That is the yellow is streaking farther from the color source. This is on any document or picture that is scanned.

Re: Scanner yellowing

Is there any way that you can test the scanner on another system to see if it's hardware related? That's the best bet - if the problem follows the scanner, then you know. The way you've described it it sounds as though the optics of the scanner are beginning to fail. Prices on scanners have dropped dramatically over the past few years and the technology has improved also, so I would weigh the cost of a new purchase against the amount of time that it will take to determine what is wrong with the one that you have.

Re: Scanner yellowing

On another machine I get the new results. New results you ask. Apparentaly since last time I worked on this the entire page less the right most 1" is yellowed if you select anything other that the "Text/Lineart" (B&W) choice. This is Vista Scan and V3.53 is what we have and the Net has Ver 3.5.1.
I know scanners are inexpensive but pulling teeth is getting bothersome. .

I'm not clear - you tried using the scanner on a different PC and found essentially the same result?

Ugh, I'd say that the optics are wearing out, and from what you've said it's only getting worse. You might contact the manufacturer and note this to them, they may have a suggestion for you to try. My experience with scanners has been that they are mostly closed and there isn't anything you can do as an end user when they start to give up the ghost - but you never know until you try!

This is gonna be really dumb, but certainly less than the price of a new scanner. We had this problem once (or VERY much like it) on a scanner at work and replacing the lamps made the problem go away. Worth a shot?

Re: Scanner yellowing

I had thought of that but a search of the net and calls to my vendors resulted in me not being able to find where to get scanner parts. The Manufacturers are of no help. I had a bulb go out in a 14 month old Mustek and they were of no help.

I guess we were lucky then. One of our techs took the bulbs out and was able to find them someplace locally. I wasn't there when he did it, but I think they "looked" just like short fluorescent bulbs.
