Open Office docs inside MSIE (MSIE 5.01)

When I use MSIE (5.01 SP1) to open links to Office 97 documents they open in new instances of their native application instead of inside MSIE. I know there is a registry hack that will let the Office documents open inside MSIE. Where can I find this hack? Thanks.

George ~

It has been awhile since using Office 97, but I believe you can open links inside IE by going to Windows Explorer in Win95/98 >tools>folder options>file types (tab). Select the particular file Office file type you are working with in Registered file types. Then hit the 'Edit'>'Edit file types> 'Open' and make sure there is a checkmark in the 'Browse in same window' box.

As far as the reg hack in 2000/XP, I am not sure, but maybe this will ring a bell if you have seen it before: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClasses & remove the browser flag values and data. Hope this at least points you in the right direction.

Hi George:
Start/Settings/Folder Options.../File Types tab & scroll to Microsoft Word Document. Then click Edit. At the bottom right of the dialog box, tick the "Browse in same window" option.
Cheers,

Thanks, Bruce and Phil. Checking 'Browse in same window' fixed my problem!

Bruce,

I'm trying this on my work machine. I have WinNT. I get as far as the edit window- but I don't have the "Browse in same window" box.

I'm trying to do the opposite- I want the document to open within the browser window.

The registry edit does not seen to give any more joy either.

Geoff ~

The recollection I had was for Win95/98. I am not sure about the NT platform and a cursory search turned up nothing that might bring further joy. If I come across something, I will post. If you do before I, please post as I would like to library that info.

Hi Geoff:
I found the answer for NT in this article,Q162059. It involves editing the registry.

Phil,

Great, thanks.

I wanted the reverse- I did want the files to open in the browser (it is actually a browser window in a VB project). I found that the value "4" (in place of the "8" mentioned in the MSKB article) forced the Office document to open inside the browser window. Now to find out if this is documented anywhere

Hey Geoff ~

You said you "found" that the value 4 in lieu of 8 worked for you. I am curious.....was this trial and error? I have wondered oftentimes when examing values if there exists a compendium of assorted values and their meaning as related to the branch key in which they reside throughout the registry

That was just trial and error. When I have a chance I will try and Google it.

I suspected that it had to be 1, 2, 4, (not 8), 16

Phil,

It worked for a while, and then it broke again.

it's not an action for a single file type. Once it starts opeing up a new window, it does it for all doc types.

I'll open a discussion in the VB board- it's probably more relevant there, as I am exploring options other than IE as an embedded browser

Hi Geoff:
Sorry it didn't work. Good luck on the VB board.
