    tweak ui not working

Does anyone know how tweak ui can be updated or repaired? After the last security update applied from MS Windows site (IE 6 fix maybe?), a number of tweaks no longer work, e.g., short cut arrow can't be eliminated etc.

    I'm running W98 SE, IE 6.

    Thanks

Have you tried re-installing Tweak UI? Do you have the latest version?

    Re: tweak ui not working

No I haven't reinstalled. I've noticed that since installing the security patch, System Suite 2000 has been prevented from tweaking some of the same functions, so my guess has been that an update might be required rather than a reinstall.

I didn't know there was an updated version of Tweak UI for Windows 98. Is there one? I have assumed the latest one for XP might be incompatible, although it would seem more suited to tweak IE6.

    Thanks

    Edited by <font color=red>WyllyWylly</font color=red> to add URL code. See the Quick Guide. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
    Edited by <font color=448800>author</font color=448800> -- jeez, you guys are quick! I know how to put the links in -- see my previous posts!! I wasn't finished yet! <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Re-installing TweakUI will not fix the problem with the short cut arrows. There is a fundamental modification made by the March 7th Security Patch that is not reversible without disabling the security patch itself. During the update Shell32.dll is replaced, and the new version of this DLL is NOT capable of processing the "Icon Overlays" correctly in Win98. This is only a Win9x problem -- all other OS's work fine.

As you can appreciate, the little arrow is called an "Icon Overlay" -- as it is a little image that is placed over the main icon. The method of processing Icon Overlays was changed in WinME and Win2K -- and this new, updated version of shell32.dll was NOT made to be "backward compatible" with Win98. You've got to love that, eh?

    You have several possible solutions:

    1) replace shell32.dll with the older version.
[problem: you are no longer patched against the vulnerability that this update was supposed to fix.]

    2) remove the "IsShortcut" data value in the registry under HKCR/lnkfile and HKCR/piffile.
[problem: this breaks the 'hot combo' keyboard shortcuts and causes duplicate right-click context menu entries]

    3) Use an icon editor to open the new shell32.dll and replace the arrow icon with all transparent pixels.
[problem: you need an icon editor capable of editing icons in a .dll file. Rec: AX-icons at http://www.axialis.com.]

    4) Disable the "Shell Icon Overlay Manager" altogether by removing its Process Server registry value -- which normally points to the shell32.dll file. To do that, find this registry key:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{63B51F81-C868-11D0-999C-00C04FD655E1}InProcServer32]
    (Default)="C:WINDOWSSYSTEMSHELL32.DLL"

This CSLID is the Class ID for the Shell Icon Overlay Manager. Double-click on the (Default) value and delete this data:

    C:WINDOWSSYSTEMSHELL32.DLL

Leave the (Default) value completely empty or blank. That 'uncouples' the Shell Icon Overlay Manager from the new DLL -- thereby removing the Overlay arrows.

    BACKUP your registry first!!

    Re: tweak ui not working

I went with option 4), it worked like a charm!

I know it's a small thing but it does restore a sense of control over my personal environment, in a positive way.

To me an icon without a shortcut arrow is a thing of beauty - the arrow only causes visual clutter and is unecessary to remind me of icon status. After all, that's what right-clicking "properties" is for, in the event I should forget what I'm looking at!

    Much appreciated, thanks!

Glad to be of service. This is a very strange issue that many people get incorrect -- there has never been an 'official' Microsoft response, perhaps because TweakUI is considered "unsupported". If you should ever need to use the Icon Overlay in the future (unlikely), just re-enter the value data that you removed -- and everything will be restored.
