Follow Up - Backups (WinXP Pro v 5.1)

A couple of weeks ago I posted a question about a tape drive with WinXP. I turned out that the tape drive was worn out and was out of warranty. I got to thinking about the price of hard drives today and USB 2 speed and looking into putting together my own external USB2 drive. I think Woody may have written an article on this.

Anyway, I was able to acquire a Maxtor 40 G 5400 RPM drive for $69 from Office Depot. I think Best Buy may even have them cheaper. I bought a USB2 External Drive enclosure from USB Gear (http://www.usbgear.com). I put the drive in the enclosure, formatted it NTFS and Voila! I now have two external USB 2 drives for backups. I just alternate them. The backups are fast and always current.

Putting together ones own external USB drives is easy and cheap. My total cost for the 40 G USB drive was $139......and it's fast!

Just thought someone might find this useful.

And what software are you using to do the backup with? Do the external drives take on "regular" drive letters in sequence? Last question, I promise! If you run Windows Explorer and look in the right pane, does XP show them as regular hard drives or down under the removable category?

Re: Follow Up - Backups (WinXP Pro v 5.1)

I have tried various software packages over the years for backups. Currently I'm using the Backup utility that is part of WinXP Pro. It works just fine with this arrangement. It worked well with the former tape drive as well. In the past I've used Backup Exec and Ultrabac. Frankly, for my situation they are not worth the price.

The drives show up in sequence as regular HDDs. I have two CD-ROMs (one ATAPI and one SCSI) on this box as well as a SCSI ZIP. They all show as removable drives. The two USB 2 drives are labelled currently as Drive H and Drive I.

For a business workstation, this backup solution seems to work very well indeed.
