ALG.EXE (V2002 Pro)

If I am using Tiny (now Keiro) Personal Firewall (TPF) do I need to have the Application Layer Gateway Service enabled? I keep getting notifications from TPF wanting me to permit Alg.exe to connect to the internet. If I don't need it, I'd rather disable it.

Chris, kill it. It doesn't do a thing for you if you're not using the XP firewall.

Thanks, it's dead. I wonder if there are any other services I can do without. For example, what is 'MS Software Shadow Copy Provider' and 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service'? My feeling is the less services I have the better - especially when I don't know what they do!

I should have included this URL in the first reply...sorry. There is an extensive guide to services in Windows 2000 and XP at http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm. Bookmark it and play around....for the record, the services you noted can also be killed!

That's a great link! I knew about the BV, but did not know about this page. I have my Lifebook configured with many of these tweaks tipped from one of my programming buds, but did not have a good grasp on specificities of the services and there dependencies.
