    HP 4100C Scanner problem

After reformatting C: and reinstalling WinME and applying the SP and reinstalling all my software, including the WinME CD driver for the 4100C, I still can't use my scanner. The driver install appeared to work correctly (it went eoj and put a shortcut on the desktop), but when I rebooted, I got a message that indicated hardware was being installed; however, the process hung, and I've been unable to get past it despite uninstalling and reinstalling the driver several times. When I try to use the scanner, I get a message that says that the scanner is in use by another program.

I did a search on the hardware forum for scanners and found nothing specific; however, i tried swapping the USB ports as suggested in a post and I've done Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/System Summary Hardware Resources/Conflicts/Sharing, but I don't see anything there that is obvious to me.

    Also Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/System Summary/Components/USB shows the 4100C with a PNP DeviceID.

    Can anyone help?

All suggestions greatly appreciated and gratefully received.

    Re: HP 4100C Scanner problem

If you go into Device Manager (shortcut: Hold down WINDOWS key and press the Pause/Break key, then select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button), does it show any entries with a yellow exclamation mark?

Anything amiss in the USB Controllers section?

    Hi Fish,

    Thanks for the response.

Device Manager shows NO yellow exclamation marks. In fact, the USB root in the PCI bus, Intel PCI Universal USB contoller shows the 4100C as being installed without problems.

    Thanks again.

What type of computer is this running on? I had a problem with Via's earlier Apollo chipset, and had to add the USB filter driver to make it work.

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks for the response.

The scanner is connected to a Dell PII. It ran fine on this system until I had to reninstall WinME. Now I can't get it to function.

    Re: HP 4100C Scanner problem

    BobH,

Does anything happen when you press the green buttons on your scanner?

I doubt I can solve your problem, but I've got a related issue with my HP4100C that may shed some light. I recently installed WinXP on my Dell P-III (after reformatting the drive, thus deleting the Win98SE scanner drivers). Since then, I've had all sorts of problems with my scanner, too. None of my programs (except Office XP) can call the scanner into action via software, but when I press the "send to screen" button on my scanner, it calls up the new WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) interface and I can tell it where to send the image. Though I can now use my scanner, the quality of my scans has decreased markedly since installing XP and using WIA.

I'm pretty sure WinME also uses WIA (instead of TWAIN) to drive scanners, though I'm not familiar with how it works. So perhaps your problem is the WIA driver, not the scanner power or USB connection.

Just a thought; sorry I can't be more helpful.

    Erik

    Re: HP 4100C Scanner problem

    Hi Erik,

    Thanks for the response.

The scanner doesn't respond to the green buttons. I think I may have a Windows ME problem. When I try to uninstall the HP Scanjet LT software, the uninstall process hangs. CTL-ALT-DEL shows it not responding. I don't understand what has happened because I have reinstalled ME several times before and had no problem reinstalling the ME driver for the 4100C

    Thanks again for the response.

    Re: HP 4100C Scanner problem

    Hi Bob:

I've been following this thread as I have an identical scanner. My own experience has been very good with installing it several times on fresh installs of W2K and once on a WXP system, but I've never tried ME (and there's a snowball's chance in h*ll that I ever will - I've got enough troubleshooting to do without shooting myself in the foot right off the bat). <img src=/S/duck.gif border=0 alt=duck width=23 height=23>

To summarize, you thought you had it installed fully, when the PC rebooted it mysteriously continued the set-up process, proceeded to hang, and now cannot be uninstalled. I think there's nothing more you can do than chalk this one up to a freak occurence during the install of the scanner where something somewhere didn't hook in right (how's that for technical terms). I would recommend reinstalling ME overtop the existing setup to see if that repairs the problem (after backing up your data, of course), and if that doesn't work, scratch it all out with a reformat and fresh install. However, if you get to that point, you should seriously consider upgrading to W2K - it's very stable now, and works like a charm.

    Re: HP 4100C Scanner problem

    Hi
I also have a HP4100C scanner. HP do not produce XP compatible drivers - I've looked. They may do so for ME, though. My only gripe is that ONE of the green buttons does not work: the one to send a scan straight to the printer. The supplied software also comes p with an error message. However, the 4100C is a fairly ancient piece of kit (i.e. more than three years old...)
