    Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

I`m sure there are some of you out there who use Hotmail and who have been reading the privacy issues in Woody`s Newsletters. When I read about Microsoft ticking the boxes to share our details , I was angry and checked my Profile details. Sure enough, the boxes had been ticked, and not by me. I unchecked them and thought that was the end of the matter. I recently received another Newsletter in which Woody was urging us to complain to Microsoft, and returned to my Profile to have another look. Guess what! The boxes had been RECHECKED. This is really beyond belief. I wrote to M. complaining, but have heard nothing from them. So, anyone in the same position as I am(they rechecked my daughter`s too) had better have a look at their Profile. How often will they do this? Today it remains OK but seems like regular visits are in order just to be sure. Elaine

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

    Hi Elaine:
I dumped my hotmail account as soon as I got wind of what they're doing. If a lot of people did that, it would teach them a lesson. There are plenty of free websites, like http://www.myrealbox.com/.

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

Hello Phil. Yes! I too would like to dump my Hotmail account.. I had a look at "myrealbox" and got the impression that they were having a lot of problems with downtime. Has this caused you any trouble? Are there any others you would recommend? I do not want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire, and am unsure which one to chose as there are so many. The ideal choice for everyone would be a free one with no ads. Is "myrealbox" dependable enough? Thanks for your help.

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

    Hi Elaine:
I have recently signed up for myrealbox & can't evaluate it yet. I haven't given out the email address & still use the one given by my ISP. I seem to remember a discussion in the Software Finds & Wants forum, but I'm not sure. Good luck & if you find what you really like, don't hesitate to let the rest of us know.
    Cheers,

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

Just back from 10 days vacation, so I'm a little late in jumping into this.

I have had a myrealbox account for probably 18 months or more (don't recall exactly how long).

I have never had a problem with their downtime, except for their scheduled downtimes.

I have used the web interface, IMAP connections and POP. All work as advertised. Currently I use the IMAP and web interface.

Not once have I ever received a piece of spam either.

Novell has this down quite well. The company I work for even has the same software to allow web based access to our corporate e-mail.

If you want to dump Hotmail and go with myrealbox, you can't go wrong. IMHO.

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

Hello carbonnb, Sorry about delay, but I have been on holiday too. Thanks for the info on myrealbox. Sounds like it is worth a try. I hate to admit it, but I am finding it hard to discover anything which seems to offer as much as Hotmail. I read user comments, and there seem to be problems with all the others.I liked the look of Incredimail (lots of Candy) but some users had problems with it too . It would not collect Hotmail properly, was full of spyware, and was almost impossible to remove. Has anyone any experience of Incredimail? I don`t want candy at the expense of spyware and performance, and will pay more heed to comments from users of this Forum. Thanks again. Elaine

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

Hope you have a good vacation.

Are you looking for a new web based e-mail account or are you looking for a new e-mail client for your PC?

I just had a quick look at Incredimail and it looks like it is an e-mail client, for connecting with your current account, where as Hotmail/myrealbox are web based e-mail accounts.

    If you are looking for a new e-mail client, can I suggest Pegasus Mail. I kind of <img src=/S/pirate.gif border=0 alt=pirate width=22 height=18> <img src=/S/jollyroger.gif border=0 alt=jollyroger width=29 height=18> this thread to discuss Pegasus with Phil and BigAl.

I have used it for probably the last 7-8 years with NO problems.

It has SO many features that it's difficult to give a short list of good things. I'll be happy to answer any questions about it that you may have.

If you do an "all forums" search for Incredimail you will find a few comments from other people that have used it. You might try sending them e-mail or private mail, inviting them to chime in, since I'm sure other people will be interested in hearing more about their experiences. Might even be good to start a new thread or revive one of the old ones, since it might get lost here under Hotmail Privacy.

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

Thanks to both carbonnb and jscher for replies. First.... I have read the thread about Pegasus and it sounds great, but considering the problems bigal had ,I think setting it up will be well beyond me as I am WAY behind him in all aspects of computer savvy. Besides, I tried to download Pegasus and it would not work. I contacted the Webmaster who said this was a common problem and offered the following advice 1: Your web browser may not be handling the transaction very well - we
encounter this a lot. Web browsers typically do FTP very poorly. If you
have access to a proper FTP client, such as WS_FTP or an FTP client on
a unix system, please try using that to get the file. If you don't have a
proper FTP client, we recommend SmartFTP, available from
http://www.smartftp.com: it's pretty, fast, reliable and free.
I have no idea what this means. His other advice about antivirus and firewall do not apply as I had tried disabling them.
Secondly..the suggestion from jscher to start a new thread about Incredimail and to do a search for it on the Forum. I did the search and only came up with 2 views. One person (Tricky) is still participating here, but the other person who did not like it is no longer a member. I`ll see how things go and maybe will post again about Incredimail as I still want to ditch Hotmail. I have another email address, so a new collection box would do me fine. I did not realise it would be so complicated to change. Stupid of me! What isn`t complicated with this computing lark? Many thanks to all who are helping or reading about my feeble efforts. (No prizes for guessing that I am a Newbie) Elaine

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

    Elaine,

    I don't think BigAl had problems, just misunderstanding, so of it my fault for not explaining clearly, come of it from not reading the help file, which is another truly great feature of Pegasus. It has a help file that ACTUALLY HELPS <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>

Which site did you try and download from? Which web browser did you use? I usually use North America (East Coast - Maine, U.S.A) with IE6 for my downloads with no problems.

If you want to try it, and I'll be more than happy to help you get it up and running, and can't download it, I can e-mail it to you. It's 3.9 Mb, so it may not go through your e-mail system, but I'm happy to try.
<hr>Many thanks to all who are helping or reading about my feeble efforts. (No prizes for guessing that I am a Newbie)<hr>
Don't worry about this at all Elaine, we were all newbies at one time or another. It's folks like the ones here that got me from PC newbie in '92, 'net newbie in '94 to where I am now.

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

Bryan's right, Elaine. Please don't be misled by the back-and-forth he and I had, 'cause all I was doing was clearing up my understanding (lack of) on a particular topic of interest to me. My download, install and trial run went perfectly. No complaints from this end about Pegasus and I'm still planning to "morph" my way into it as my primary mail software. Hope you get the download straightened out so you too can give it a try.

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

.Thanks Bryan nd BigAl for answering so quickly
To Bryan, I tried the Maine download first as it is nearest to me,and then I even tried the west coast one. Have tried them again and only get
"The Page Cannot Be Displayed" Like you I have IE6 so if it worked for you it should have worked for me too. Thanks for offering to send it to me ,but Hotmail won`t allow any more than 2MB, so I`m afraid that won`t work. That`s another reason I want to leave them, as they stop your mail at 2MB unless you pay for more space.I`ll just keep visiting the site at different times of day in hope of success. Oh...and thanks for the Newbie encouragement Much appreciated
To BigAl Thanks for puting me straight. I most probably will never be delving so deep into the workings of Pegasus as you do so I have decided to give it a try (If I can ever manage to get it). I hope you have everything sorted out now.
I read many of the threads which all of you knowledgable users participate in, and never cease to wonder at how much you all know about all aspects of computing. Thank goodness you all share with the Newbies!. If I keep pestering you for answers, maybe one day I will be able to help someone too. Many thanks to you all again. Elaine

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

That's interesting that you can't get the download from the Maine site.

If you want, I will put a copy on my website for you to try and get it from. Just PM my your e-mail address, and I will e-mail you the URL.

All that I ask is that once you have it, you let me know so I can delete it.

Let me know if you want me to do this.

    Another alternative is Tucows

Go there, Select Windows (from the Desktop software section in the middle), Select Internet from the tabs at the top. The select e-mail clients from the E-MAIL section and the scroll down to Pegasus Mail.

Once you get down to Pegasus, you will see a list of OSs that Pegasus supports on the right. Click on your OS.

Then depending on if you have used Tucows before, it may ask you to select a mirror close to you, or it may take you right to the download.

Good luck. Let me know how you make out, and if you want me to put Pegasus on my site for you to grab.

<hr>Oh...and thanks for the Newbie encouragement Much appreciated<hr>
No thanks needed for this. We were ALL newbies at one time or another and needed encouragement. Some of STILL need encouragement at times. I know I do, especially when things aren't working.

So BigAl, it looks like you are happy with Pegasus? Any stumbling blocks, or questions that I can answer, or try to anyway, for you to speed your morphing?

    Re: Hotmail Privacy (IE 6)

Nah, thanx Bryan. I just can't seem to get myself comfortable with this business of HTML email. I had a fellow Lounger (whom I won't name) who sent me an email yesterday that (I think) is HTML but I can't get Pegasus to let me see it, even if I right click and say open in browser. I say I think 'cause I really don't know for sure yet. I'm still experimenting with it. This is just a very tough emotional or mental or whatever transition after MANY years of plain ol' Netscape/Mozilla mail that just showed it to me. But, I'm lookin' .....
