Emails with graphic attachments (OE 6)

I send quite a few graphic files to relatives who are running OE. When they open the email, the pictures show up directly below the message. Is there a way for these pictures to not show below the message, but to only show as a file(s) in the Attach: area where they can double click it to open a specific attachment file? Surely there is a way to do this! I did a search but did not see any previous posts on this. If I missed it, I apologize. Thanks for any input you may have.

Re: Emails with graphic attachments (OE 6)

I can't check this as I'm not at home (where my OE is) at the moment, but I'm pretty certain there's an option in Tools, Options to decide whether graphic attachments show up in the emails or only when opened separately - BUT - I'm also pretty certain that this is an individual setting for your machine, not for the emails.

That means that you can set your machine to only show graphics when opened separately, but for this to work on the recipient's machine the *recipient* has to have this option set, too.

I'll check for a definitive answer tonight, but I'm reasonably sure this is the case.

Send the graphic files as attachments, using "Plain text" format for the email, works the best.

But, if you are using the HTML format you have to use the " Insert, file attachment" NOT the "Insert Picture" selection from the menu. This will make a attachment, as the insert picture will insert the picture within the body of the email.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Emails with graphic attachments (OE 6)

    Dave,
I typically use HTML format and I do use "Insert, File Attachment". I also tried using Plain Text format and it does the same thing. Where might there be other options that could control this? I feel certain my old machine had it the way I want it. I'm running Win2K.

    Thanks,

    Beryl,
I've looked all over the Tools | Options area and cannot find an option that might control this. Any idea what kind of machine option might control it?

    Thanks,

i thought older versions of OE has the option to display inline or as attachment, but i don't see it on my win2k machine either.

As for sending, remember, this is a user setting so while they are inline to you they might not be to the person you send to.

Re: Emails with graphic attachments (OE 6)

    MJ,
Yes, I realize that. When I send a file with a graphic attachment, the attachment does not show embedded in the message before I send it. But when I send it to myself, it is embedded in the message. If I could figure out how to fix, I'd share it with my relatives who have complained about the problem as well.

    Thanks,

Re: Emails with graphic attachments (OE 6)

unless their OE has a don't show images inline option, there is nothing you (or they) can do - it's OE's way of dealing with attachments. Well, you could zip them... or they can use a different mail program. Outlook doesn't do images inline, no way, no how.

Is there a reason they don't like inline images? I know half the outlook users are mad that outlook doesn't do inline imaging... they'd gladly trade features with your family. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I use OutLook at the office, and you're right, no inline images.

I sent my inlaws 8 jpeg images that I scanned. In the email I described each of the images. When they received the email, they decided to print out the message. Instead of just the message, all 8 images were printed as well, which didn't print well when inline and sure did use up the printer ink.

Re: Emails with graphic attachments (OE 6)

    MJ,
I found MS Knowledge Base Article Q234489, which applies to OE 5, 5.01, 5.5 for Win 95 and 98. It mentions modifying the registry. In reviewing my registry key per the article, it does not have a DWORD value as noted. Is this because I am using OE 6 and Win2k, or do you think I can add the DWORD value in accordance with the article even though I'm using OE6 and Win2k?

    Any thoughts?

If worse comes to worse and there is no solution, you can save the email and then print it without the graphics. Save it as a text file, then print. It only takes a few seconds to do, then it can be deleted after printing even.

I would try it - the worse that should happen is it won't work. it shouldn't affect your system otherwise. and if you are lucky, the family will have win9x versions. <g>

Don't know if this would work but in Tools/Options/Send/HTML settings there is a box to check or uncheck that says "Send Pictures with Messages" It may not mean the same thing though, I haven't tried it.
