Disk Clean Up Stalls (Win XP Pro)

I have never run disk clean up but I have accessed it to see how much space would
be created. It always seem poised to run. I have my hard drive divided into 4, and wanted
to run it on "C". I have 3 GB of free space left, so I don't think there is a situation
where there is not enough space if it needed some (I know defrag requires 15% to run
fully otherwise it just does a partial defrag. When I try to run this the progress bar stops
and stalls less than a third of the way and it doesn't run. Could the file for it be corrupted,
    and can I fix this?

    Thanks,

How long have you waited before you give up on it? It goes through a little bit of compressing unused files by default, and that can take a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time on a large partition.

Thanks Mark. That's probably exactly it. I'll give it a try but long time is right because
I have waited several minutes, and what puzzles me is before it began right away.
I remember the mention of disc compression in the box, and time must be proportional
to how much (15 plus GB) is on that drive. Tomorrow I'll give it considerably more time.

    Hi
If you are using NTFS and if you have encrypted files on that partition, I have sometimes found that defrag balks when it comes to these. Could this be the case?

    Edited by <font color=red>WyllyWylly</font color=red> to add URL code. See the Quick Guide. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Hi Merc--

I am using NTFS--have to with a 32GB drive and above, but there are many other reasons
I would. But it's not defrag. I defraged recently with the defrag tool in XP from Disk Keeper.
I also recently "optimized the disc" with Norton System Works which Norton at least
claims is better than defraging. I could get Diskeeper which has a "keep the sectors
from fragmenting feature" at least they advertise that at their website but most pople
say it's not necessary. Any thoughts on a comparison of those three (what I meant was
that defrag in Windows XP which used to be made by Norton up through Win 2K was
a lower end one than Diskeeper made by Executive Software at
    http://www.execsoft.com/consumer/store/pag...14int&RId=2.
So back to the problem. I can run defrag just fine. I always have been taught to
turn off Norton Antivirus (System Works and Internet Security in my case) and the
Webshots screensaver before running it. I can run Norton Speed Disc just fine.
But after 5 hours, Disc Clean Up was still frozen or stalled with the progress bar about
one sixth the way over--I went to bed and ran it--which I would never do with Defrag
or Speed Disc because I have read (not sure if true) that disasters can happen if
defrag hangs up--that MBR's can be moved or MBR's and boot.ini can be damaged
beyond repair in the MRC (Microsoft Recovery Console). But Mark said to give it time
so I gave it five hours and it still won't run.
Is there anyway guys to fix the file or files that represent Disk Clean up?
By the way, is there a website or a Microsoft URL that would list all the files for
different utilities within Windows operating systems like Disk Clean Up or the Search
Companion. I want to fix Disk Clean Up--how do I do it or where do I get a new one?
I wonder if I could search for it on the CD or repair it in the MRC? I want to find
the Search Companion file or files or folder and then right click the file and pin it to my
start menu. Right now the only way I can access Search Companion is either to
hit the Windows key +F key or to type in something in the address bar and it comes up
with the "ask a question box added" because it is the default search engine. I know that
    could be changed.
So how can I fix Disk Clean Up and how do you all know the names for all the
files and folders of the various utilities and components that are intrinsic to Windows XP?

    Thanks,

    defrag

Re: Disk Clean Up Stalls (Win XP Pro)

    Hi
Yes, it didn't always happen that way. I found though that if I 'Deleted' the encrypted file(s) everything went smoothly. I have to admit I didn't research it thoroughly enough to give a definitive answer. It occurred to me it might have been your source of difficulty, but clearly not, from what you say.
My Virus Scanner AVG definitely doesn't like NTFS encryption and locks up solid. I reported it, and they're working on it.

I have left Disk Cleanup overnight after waiting 3 or 4 hours on one occassion - and this was just waiting for it to tell me what options I had, not to actually do anything - it did finish in the end.

Stuart--That may be pointing me in the right direction; Marc indicated the same thing.
I tried also turning off all Antivirus programs and Norton Internet Security and running it
for five hours over night, and still it wouldn't run. I wonder if I can repair this file or folder
by finding a command that would do that in the Mic Recov Console.

    defrag
