defrag takes forever

Dell Laptop 300 PII 128mb 4 G 2.5 used Win 98 SE After working on it for several hours with Word Perfect, response becomes retarded, keystrokes, mouse movements are like syrup, etc. I ran a temp file cleaner, scandisk, and Win defrag. The defrag progesses quickly up to 10% and works there for as long as 90 minutes, then zips through the remainder in no time. Repetitive problem, I defrag sometimes 2-3 times a day, which fixes the problem temporarily, but it returns in a few hours of word processing. Have disabled everything I can from running in the background, have 80% RAM free. Just can't figure it out? After the defrag, performance is as usual, then goes slowly downhill.

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL code for Knowledge Base article. See Post 167742 for details.

I'm not sure what's happening, but perhaps this search will help. In particular, Disk Defragmenter Hangs After Choosing Disk to Defragment may help.

You might also check the KB article Q186171.

I have downloaded the defrag utility for Windows ME & it does work better & faster than the Win98 one. I can't find where I downloaded it from. I did find a website that claims to have it here, but I do not like to recommend sites that I'm not familiar with. I feel safer with something like zdnet or download.com, etc. If you decide to try it, be advised--you're on your own.

Incidentally, defrag pauses at about 10%, when it's calculating where to put files based on their usage. That information is contained in a file whose name is on the tip of my tongue. That file may be corrupt. If I find my tongue, I'll post back.

OK. It's not one file, it's several & they are in an applog folder named applicationName.lgn where n=drive letter where the application is.

I totally agree with you about downloading from "approved" or "safe" sources like ZDNet and Download.com. Unfortunately, I've not found a source other than what I have up. To anyone downloading the file from my site (or ANY site, including Microsoft), be sure and scan it with your virus scan software before using it.

Hi foghat:
Thanks for responding. I feel much better, knowing that the site belongs to someone who hangs out at Woody's Lounge. Not that someone devious couldn't register here (after all, they let me in), but its sort of like meeting the same person in the same restaurant; you feel a little safer. And yes, I would always virus scan anything I download; I even do that if I download an attachment that I created.

Could be a symptom of a disk drive being ill.

1. Back up everything to tape.
2. Run a scandisk with full sector checking.
3. Download the latest diagnostics from the drive manufacturer's web site and run them.
