Strange message on startup (XP Home Edition Version 2002)

I have recently upgraded my system from Windows ME to XP Home Edition, and a couple of problems remain:

Upon startup, there is a black screen displaying system information and hardware detection results (e.g., "Legacy Keyboard Detected"). At the bottom, it says "Press F1 to resume."

Occasional crashes, preceded by repeated clicks from the CPU, and almost always leading to a blue screen displaying error messages only an engineer would understand. (In ME, these were always 'Unable to Write to Drive C:' errors, while XP displayed a blue screen with more detailed information and instead of crashing, restarted.)[/list]Does anybody have an idea as to how I might fix this problem? I have contacted both Microsoft and Compaq, and neither one has provided much in the way of usable advice. A ROMpaq was used, which supposedly updated the BIOS, but my problem remains. When software support is contacted, they insist that the problem is hardware related; and when hardware support is consulted, their sage advice is that it's a software-related problem.
Any help I receive will be greatly appreciated.

The clicking noise you're hearing makes me wonder if the hard drive is getting ready to fail. Can you run a thorough disk check on the volume and see if it uncovers any errors? To do so, open My Computer and right-click on your C: drive. Select Properties with the left mouse button and then click on Tools - you should see the "Check for errors" button there. Make sure you tick both checkboxes....this will also require a reboot, so plan to get some coffee or something.

Also, can you post the error that you are seeing on the blue screen? The error text would be enough - along with the first series of numbers/letters. You're probably seeing something like KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR...Woody's latest Windows XP Watch has good information, and he's detailed some steps there that could help you get to the bottom of it.

The other issue is strictly hardware related, that's your system BIOS complaining about something. You might want to post that in the Hardware board. When you see that message, Windows has not entered the picture.

Unfortunately, by the time I could excavate some writing material and something to write with, the error message had gone away. About all I can do now is hope that either nothing like this goes wrong again (fat chance) or that I can get the message recorded on paper when it happens again.
