    File Access lister

I'm on a (MS-NT) network; are there tools that allow me to create directory / file listsings where access (by groups and/or users) is also listed??? I'm owning some shares and there seems no simple way to list the access I've given (other than capturing the screens...)

I tested out a product called Security Explorer a couple of years ago. It was quite good at displaying access information. I don't recall whether it creates exportable reports.

Unfortunately, when I used some of its bulk change features on an NT4 server I completely wrecked the access lists (to the point that they could no longer be modified using native tools) and had to rebuild the entire directory structure from scratch and move all the data, and then rebuild all the individualized permissions by hand. Needless to say, I stopped testing at that point. However, for viewing, I think it probably is safe.

Thanks, I quickly looked at their Web-site. This indeed seems to promise what I'm looking for but it's much more than that (I want to list only; not to change). Hope that somewhere out there, smaller little listers will be available. For now, I'll wait a bit more to see if this triggers more responses (I'm even wondering if this wouldn't be very easy to do in VB???).

I don't know the Windows API calls to get the info, or the Windows Management Interface (WMI) way, which can be manipulated in VBScript. Must be something.

You probably know about the command line program CACLS. If not, you could try using that and redirecting the results to a text file. I think it will handle multiple layers of subdirectories. CACLS is a dangerous tool and should be used with great care.

    Thanks for the tip... I have a problem and a question related to your CACLS suggestion <img src=/S/blackteeth.gif border=0 alt=blackteeth width=20 height=20>

    * Question: Will CACLS run under Win98 (that's my Local OS; remember, I was interested to see the protections on my dirs & files on the network)
    * Problem: If yes, where can I get hold of this tool (I looked around but couldn't find the program itself; obviously I did find a lot of pages describing the tool)

I think CACLS needs to run on the NT server, but I've never tried it from a workstation. It is in the executable path for NT Server, but I couldn't tell you which folder. If you're not a network admin, you probably need to find something else. Sorry.
