Copernic Technologies Inc has a cool FREE program called WinKey that allows you to create customized keyboard shortcuts using the Windows (WIN) key. WinKey does not allow you to customize the built-in WIN key shortcuts such as WIN + E, but there are hundreds of other combinations you can use. You can create shortcuts for files, folders, programs, and web sites, and can specify parameters like you would for a desktop shortcut. Attached WinKey screen capture illustrates how you would create a shortcut for the D: drive, in Windows Explorer view, using WIN + CTRL + D as shortcut. This program is a great time-saver & is highly recommended.

My understanding of using the Windows key is that it invokes the Start Menu - if you then press "E" it selects the first item on your Start menu beginning with "E", and if it is the only item beginning with "E", activates it.

From what you are saying, I think you simply need to change the target of your Explorer link on the Start Menu - try a right_click over it and select Properties...

Hi Leif, I think it must be doing something else as that was the shortcut I had working before with CTR+ALT+W. With this I would get to D: drive as per the parameters I'd specified but when I used (and use) WIN+E I get My computer).

I'll take a look at WINKEY. I've been using something called dirkey (http://www.protonfx.com/dirkey/). This allows users to bookmark folders using the number keys 0-9 (CTR+ALT+number to set the bookmark and CTR+Number to jump to the directory). The reason I like this utility is that it works in both Explorer and in Save (open etc) dialogues. Very handy for quick navigation, especially when saving files but doesn't launch programs.
