    Big Brother Post Editing

I just sent Claude an e-mail about this and then realized this would probably be faster but then Big Brother might see this and make the change here as well. But maybe not At least not in the preview window. Apologies to Claude .....

I just made a post with a reference to an Echo installer that is causing a lounger some consternation as "a little @#$!%" and when it was posted, @#$!% was changed to @#$!%, even when I edited the post it still came up @#$!%. What gives ??? I can't believe that Woody himself would object to a reference to a "bug".

    Wrong again......

Well the filter is unmanned but it doesn't contain bug or buggy so I wonder what word you did use?

    Re: Big Brother Post Editing

    Hey Eileen,
Thanks for the reply. I was pretty sure that it was a filter that was pre-programed for certain words or phrases that was doing the editing. The word I was trying to get it to accept was "@#$!%". I know that there are some slang connotations for that which are a bit off color but that's a bit of a reach for a filter to draw those from the context it was used in. The post was in the Windows 98 forum in response to "Find Taskbar or Tray Folder".
Perhaps it's due to the international nature of the lounge, and the word is offensive to the people of a culture other than our western world of loose moral standards. <img src=/S/devil.gif border=0 alt=devil width=15 height=15>
PS - I just realized that the filter is going to edit the word out of this post as well. I'll try a private message to get the word across if it's edited out here.

    Thanks Dave !! I guess that's why you're the eXpert <img src=/S/clever.gif border=0 alt=clever width=15 height=15> and I'm just a lowly lounger <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> . Gives one something to aspire to. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>

    Re: Big Brother Post Editing

That is most definitely a 'badword' even though in recent years its true meaning has been obscured.
In some parts of England it's used almost affectionately as in "Oh, you poor little b*gg*r!" but It's still not a word we want to hear our children use.

DocWatson is right about cultural context. Here in NZ, that word is not considered that extreme a profanity. It has even recently been used as the entire script of a motor vehicle television advertisment.

Enter the word with, say, dots between the letters.

    <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> I <img src=/S/love.gif border=0 alt=love width=15 height=15> that commercial. Saw it in Oz when I was visiting my mother.
Still, I don't think they'd screen it in a kindergarten even in the most sophisticated society.

    Re: Big Brother Post Editing

If my recollection is right, I and my buddies were referred to as "little @#$!%'s" quite regularly by our parents. That would be when we'd been up to a little mischief or doing something that wasn't necessarily wrong but still not appropriate for us to be doing. Mind you, that was back in the 40's and 50's. Now, when I venture anywhere near an elementary school yard, I hear language from 5, 6, 7 year olds that either makes me want to slap them upside the noggin or sends me searching for a dictionary.

In spite of above, the rules have to be set somewhere and if @#$!% is not allowed........OK, I can live with that.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: Big Brother Post Editing

    Eileen, Dave, Drakon, Howard & Ken;
Thanks to all for the input and cultural education. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15> I didn't realize what a can of worms I was opening with that silly little word. Just as Ken stated, that word comes from my childhood days in the 50's as well as some old films from the 30's & 40's (The Little Rascals comes to mind) and from the 70's british rock stars and fans using the expression "B*gg*r that !" on American TV. We Yanks (or at least our parents) didn't have a clue what they were really saying. Kinda like the Yiddish word we all throw around today "s*hmu*k" without the slightest clue or concern for its translated meaning (I won't go into that here).
As much as I agree with not wanting our kids to be repeating this stuff, I'm afraid it's too late. They learn more of this stuff watching TV in the afternoon after school than they will ever get here. Ken is, unfortunately, too right about the elementary school kids. The sad part is that it's our fault...... We raised them and <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15> create the media that they watch and listen too!!! But that's an issue for another forum.
I'll mind my Ps & Qs and not question the wisdom of the filters further. <img src=/S/gent.gif border=0 alt=gent width=17 height=25>

Ah yes, don't blame yourself too much, tho. Kids always learn far more in the playground than from either their parents or their school teachers.

    >> filters on the playgrounds

That would be a double-edged sword. That is after all their society, the peer group they have to learn to live with. They recognise the difference between the two worlds and realise it's not a good idea to try and mix them.
