    Mail Merge font size in Word:Mac v.X (Office:Mac v

Using Word:Mac v.X with my Mac G4 (OS 10.1.5) with a mail merge letter all goes well except for one thing. The imported items (address etc.) from FileMaker Pro 5.5 won't print in the same font size (Palatino 10) as the body of the letter. I can set up everything to be the right size (10) and as soon as I select "show data" (instead of field names) the font size of just the imported items (From FileMaker Pro 5.5) jumps to 12, and prints that way too -- it's not just a screen font thing. What's up with that? I can't find anything in the "Help" sections in the program, and I've tried every way I can to find a fix or work around. No luck. Can someone tell me how to fix this problem? I downloaded the latest service release and that didn't help.

    Hi James:
I have no experience with a Mac, but if mail merge works the same, you need to format the main document the way you want. If you select the merge fields that you insert in the "Main Document" (be it Form letters, labels, etc.) & change the font to Palatino 10pt, the final letters should have that format.

    Hope this helps,

Have you used Word for Windows? If you do, you know that you can toggle all the field codes in your document from "Results" to "Codes" and back using Alt+F9. Not sure how you do that on Mac. (I dropped by the Apple store and played with Word v.X for a while, but was sort of lost with all the floating things...)

Anyway, on the Windows side, if you want to prevent incoming data formats from carrying over to your document, you switch to viewing codes and add the MERGEFORMAT switch to the field. Normally this is inserted by default if you check the "Preserve formatting during updates" option. If you already have this, then switch back to viewing results, select the field and check whether is it 12 point for some reason. If not, sounds like a bug!

Thanks, Phil. We've tried all that without any luck. I'm beginning to think there is a "bug" in the v.X version of Word. Anybody else got any ideas?

Thanks "jscher." We solved the problem. It took Heidi (my wife) about 90 minutes on the telephone with a Microsoft technician, but the detective work finally paid off. The culprit was a "preferences" file for Word that needed to be trashed and rebuilt. That's easy on a Mac, but obviously not so apparent that the fix was accomplished quickly. Thanks for posting an update. Sounds suspiciously like a type of corruption that occurs with Word for Windows where you need to delete the data key from your registry and let Word rebuild it (losing some of your customizations in the process). At least it's an equal opportunity problem. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Yup! Something was corrupt for sure! I have never found that Macintosh computers are free of such problems. I have five Macs, all currently operating, and they all do different things (have different foibles and neuroses), and all crash more often than I think they should. I have LESS trouble with my Dell Inspiron 4100 lap top, but that may be because I use it so little. The Mac OS X does so far seem to be an improvement over OS 9.x. It was my wife's G4 desktop DP500 running OS 10.1.5 that had the problem using Word:Mac v.X. It has been more stable for her than the G3 I'm now using that used to be her's. Oh well. I'm still waiting for the problem free computer... but I'm not holding my breath!
