    Lost recycle Bin (V2002 Pro)

I don't know how long it's been missing but I can't access my recycle bin. The icon is on the desktop but if I choose right-click and explore I get an explorer window with a roving flashlight - the thing windows uses when it's showing that it's looking for something. I tried emptying the recycle bin and the usual display with the disappearing trash comes up but it doesn't seem to stop and I suspect it's not really deleting anything.

I'll confess right away that before I noticed I was changing settings with GPedit - 'Enabling turn of personalised menus' was one - changing it back to 'not configured' hasn't helped me.

    Please, can anyone help?

If my system was behaving like that, I'd start with a Scandisk.

Re: Lost recycle Bin (V2002 Pro)

Is scandisk called Check Disc (chkdsk.exe) now? I checked Drive C: for errors by right-clicking the drive in Windows Explorer, selecting the Tools tab and choosing 'Error-checking'. Windows checked Drive C: and didn't report any errors.

Also I created a dummy text "comeback bin please.txt" moved it to the recycle bin and did a search for it (I checked the 'search hidden files and folders' check box. I found the file at: c:RECYCLERSS-1-5-21-73586283-484061587-725345543-500. I have no idea what this means. I tried to open the containing directory (select the file in the search results and right click to bring up the context menu) as I figured this would get me into the recycle bin - but the same explorer window with flashlight appeared again.

I'm beginning to think I've done something really wrong. The system feels flaky. Does anyone have any more suggestions, please?

CHKDSK is the Windows NT version of scandisk. You just happen to be using a version of NT now. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

The recycler folder you found is the recycle bin for your user profile. In NT the user profiles need to be kept separate and that's how it is accomplished with the Recycle Bin - using folders called Recycler{uid}.

What other changes did you make with the Group Policy Editor?

As a last resort, Chris, you can try to re-run XP setup right over your current installation, it should correct any policy changes and other niggling weird problems without destroying your installation.

Re: Lost recycle Bin (V2002 Pro)

Hi Mark, you asked what other changes I made with the Group Policy Editor - that's a very good question! Unfortunately I can't answer it - never make system changes at the end of a long day, always make a physical note of changes you do make, back up before making a change - 3 pieces of advice I totally ignored!

The good news is I think everything is OK! (at least regarding the recycle bin). I thought perhaps I was being a little impatient with Windows so I tried to open the recycle bin in Explorer and let it keep looking with that flashlight. I did some washing up and returned to find the bin had been located. It contained 23,704 objects (1.39 GB). I'm pretty sure i know what happened. A couple of days ago I deleted a folder of web clipart (originally from Art Explosion). I thought I'd deleted the folder directly (doesn't pressing Shift + delete keys on the keyboard do this?) Anyway, it obviously ended up in the recycle bin and gave it indigestion. I cleared out the recycle bin (this took five or six minutes) and now it seems back to normal.

I think I'm going to ask for some advice about Users, accounts and styles but I'll post my questions separately.

Thanks for the help. The lounge is a great place with good people.

    Chris
