Rpcss.exe

Can anyone tell me what this file does and why it would be in the Windows/System folder of a Windows 98SE system? From it's properties it appears to be an NT file. ZoneAlarm identifies it as Distributed COM Services and it seems to be listening to different ports when I'm on the internet. It is logged by ZA as "Distributed COM Services,0.0.0.0:0" and I have denied it access to the internet for quite some time. But it keeps popping up and listening. I was part of a shared computing project for cancer research for a few months, a couple years ago. Could this be a remnant of that? I can't rename it (says it's in use by Windows) and I am reluctant to delete it without knowing what it is / does.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !!

Have a look at this site: http://www.cexx.org/rpcss.htm or have a look at what Google returned with a search on Rpcss.exe

They should give you the info you need to make an informed descision.

Re: Rpcss.exe

Hey Bryan,
Thanks for the links. Great article on RPCSS.exe . Answered most of my questions. I should have thought of Google on my own I refer others there so often. Guess I should listen to my own advice sometimes !! It says I can rename the file, but when I try to I get an error message telling me that the file is in use by Windows. Could it be that I'm trying to do it while online ??

Re: Rpcss.exe

Possibly.

Try rebooting into DOS mode and rename from there.

The reboot back into 98

Unfortunately, common sense isn't so common !! I'm practically DOS illiterate, having gotten into computing with Windows 95b. Can you give me the command line to rename the file ?? I'd sure be grateful.

Sorry an assumption on my part that you'd already be in the System directory.

I'd be willing to bet if you check your windows directory, that's where rcpss.old will be.

You just moved and renamed all in one fell swoop.

You know more about DOS than you though

Re: Rpcss.exe

Nope. It's right where it was, in the System folder, just renamed Rpcss.old.
