    help with graphics (Word97/XP)

    Greetings everyone,

    Can anyone tell me why the document size blows out when a JPG is inserted into it?
    to clarify the problem I'll give you an example.

    Pasting a 35K jpg into a blank doc based on Normal.dot increases the file size from 21k to 56k
    BUTTTTT
    Pasting the same graphic into a otherwise blank document ( except for headers/footers) based on one of my templates
    blows the file size out from 21K to 589K <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    I haven't been able to explain let alone fix this problem. I insert pictures using VBA code but the code doesn't hold any clues.
    I can't find anything that converts graphic formats or allows me to programmatically control file size/compression. As the finished docs are
    stored in a Doc Management System the bloating becomes a significant waste of hard drive real estate.

    Even a site that gives a explaination of how Word mis-handles graphic inserts would help as I'm basically self-taught VBA and my
    comics just don't cover the worlds greater evils such as this and self-destructing styles.

    Remember that all graphics in Word get converted to Word Art which makes VERY large files. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: help with graphics (Word97/XP)

    I use this dialog box to allow the user to insert a garphic.

    If Dialogs(wdDialogInsertPicture).Show = 0 Then
    ' Graphic cancelled
    Selection.MoveLeft Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1, Extend:=wdExtend
    Selection.Cut
    Exit Function
    End If

    Substituting the following InlineShape makes NO difference to size...
    Selection.InlineShapes.AddPicture FileName:= _
    "Cocuments and SettingsFrankMy DocumentsMy PicturesCAKE.JPG", _
    LinkToFile:=False, SaveWithDocument:=True

    Now both work but what I can't understand is why using either of the above(or manually inserting) to insert a graphic
    Causes a document based on the Normal.dot to be almost TEN TIMES SMALLER than one of my customized templates
    Could this blow out be caused by something in my templates or is this a Word problem?

    Yes, granted.

    But that doesn't explain the Normal.doc being 76K and my custom template based doc being 593K with EXACTLY the
    same graphic(& NOTHING else) inserted using the same method.

    Unless documents created using your template are saving as RTF, I can't think of any good explanation. Any unusual (Tools

    Re: help with graphics (Word97/XP)

    In my experience, the file size blows out when Word is asked to convert the jpg from that native format into Words bitmap format. Unfortunately, Word thinks it has been asked to do this as soon as someone double clicks the graphic which fires up the built-in graphics editor.

    This means that I can insert a JPG and the file size goes up by approximately the size of the compressed JPG. As soon as someone double clicks the graphic, the file size reflects the size that the JPG would be if it was saved as an uncompressed bitmap file type like BMP or uncompressed TIF.

    To check this is not the case with your template, remove the graphic, save the file and note the file size. Now Insert>Picture to bring in the graphic, save and note the file size. I would expect that if the graphic has not been double-clicked then the file size increase would be close to the JPG file size.

    Is it possible that copying the image from one file to another converts the contents of the clipboard to RTF and expands the graphic? I haven't seen this but then again I don't go looking for it.

    Nothing I do can stop this from happening.

    I'll be manually rebuilding one of the offending templates from Normal.dot upwards to see if this fixes the problem.

    Do you know of any way to stop Word from converting/uncompressing a graphic file?

    Unfortunately docs sare saved as .DOC so I cannot explain whats happening.

    But as these templates have evolved from W95 through W97 and now to XP,and the codes completely re-written ( no WordBasic)
    maybe..maybe.. maybe there's something hiding..

    Although it's a longshot, there was a bad converter for Word97 that saved RTF files as .DOC. If this setting got converted up, it would show under Tools

    That's not my experience. Word is good at compressing BMP files: they can add substantially fewer bytes to a Word document than you would anticipate from their size in the file system. Conversely, Word adds some kind of object wrapper to non-native formats, such as GIF and JPG, which makes them slightly larger when inserted than in the file system. If you Paste, the results are as not as predictable.

    <font color=blue>Afterword:</font color=blue> As an illustration of Word's ability to compress BMP files, I inserted two 115

    Re: help with graphics (Word97/XP)

    As an addendum...

    this blow-out appears to be restricted to some W97 templates whose Word.Basic was upgraded to VBA in WordXP. The 'fix' was to start with a clean
    template based on WordXPs Normal.dot and then import all code etc into this clean template.

    I can't find anything wrong with the defective(?) templates so I assume that they where corrupted in some way.

    Just another of those wonderful things Word does .....

    Re: help with graphics (Word97/XP)

    Hi there - we ran into this problem also and I found out that when a graphic is inserted into Word doc and when it is saved, two copies of the graphic are saved in the document one in whatever your format is - PNG, GIF, or JPEG format but then it is also converted as Windows Metafile format. We wrote some code to apply at login. Try this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q224663
