    Mis-Sized Labels (see WOW 7.38) (97, 2000, and 2002)

    Hi everybody (especially Phil!)

I've attached a document generated by Word 2002 that illustrates the custom label mis-sizing bug I mentioned in WOW 7.38.

The document appears correctly on-screen, but it doesn't print right - at least, not on my DJ 930C.

Details (including a screen shot of my son's custom settings) are in the document.

If you have any insight into the problem, I'm all ears!

    Re: Mis-Sized Labels (see WOW 7.38) (97, 2000, and 2002)

    Hi Woody:
Well, I think I know what happened, although I haven't searched the KB for any documentation yet. I'm guessing that you have Tools/Options/Print/Allow A4/Letter paper resizing checked in Word 2000 & 2002. It seems that if you have that option checked & you create labels on A4 paper, Word "knows" that you really wanted them smaller. I understand that if you create a document on 8-1/2 X 11 & then put it on A4 paper, it must be resized to maintain the same relative formatting. So Word shrinks your tables. However, while I don't know if this is a bug or "by design", Word should know that if you go to the trouble of specifying exact label dimensions & paper size all in the same dialog box, that you mean it.

I did these experiments using Word 2000 & HP Laserjet: 5P:
    (I haven't had a chance to test Word 97)
    <table border=1><td align=center valign=top>Document</td><td align=center valign=top>A4/letter resize</td><td align=center valign=top>Print Result</td><td valign=top>Your labels</td><td valign=top>Checked</td><td valign=top>Label too small</td><td valign=top>Your labels</td><td valign=top>Not checked </td><td valign=top>Labels correct</td><td valign=top>My labels on 81/2 X 11</td><td valign=top>Checked</td><td valign=top>Labels correct</td><td valign=top>My labels on 81/2 X 11</td><td valign=top>Not checked</td><td valign=top>Labels still correct</td><td valign=top>My labels on A4</td><td valign=top>Checked</td><td valign=top>Labels too small</td><td valign=top>My labels on A4</td><td valign=top>Not checked</td><td valign=top>Labels correct</td></table>

Does the option make any difference in Word 97?

    Phil, I haven't tested labels, but that option makes a <font color=6495ed>huge</font color=6495ed> difference in Word97.

We turned this off with VBA at my last place of employment because the Milan office documents and the London office documents printed very strangely in New York. There are numerous articles about cut off text on the MSKB. I advise to always uncheck "Allow A4/Letter paper resizing" and modify pages manually if necessary.

    Phil -

Sunuvagun. Unchecking that box on my Office 2000 and Office XP machines solved the problem!

Perplexingly, unchecking the box on my Office 97 machine didn't change anything - the labels printed fine before, and they print fine now.

Many thanks for the help! I'll publish an update in WOW...

Thanks, Van. I never paid much attention to this before. (not worldly enough, I guess <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)

I have been fighting this problem for months. I posted the symptoms on a couple of other forums but received nothing useful in reply. But unchecking the resizing option did the trick.

Many thanks - now I can address my Christmas cards.
