    Apostrophe (Excel 2000)

When I enter an apostrophe, as in '02, it does not appear in the cell. I realize that Lotus used the apostrophe as a formatting code, but I have unchecked the "transition navigation keys" under the transition tab and still I can't get the apostrophe to appear. I format the '02 as text and that doesn't work. It's driving me nuts . There's probably some simple way to do this, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Re: Apostrophe (Excel 2000)

Excel uses the single quote as an indicator that whatever is in the cell is text, so when you enter, for example, '02, Excel displays only "02" in the cell and treats it as text. However, if you use the actual apostrophe key (on my keyboard it is the key to the left of the 1 key and above the Tab key), the apostrophe will appear in the cell. Hope this is what you were looking for...

Thanks, George. That helped a lot (I'm no longer tearing out my hair). However, one more question. When I type '02, the apostrophe should appear in the opposite direction from the standard apostrophe. Is there any way to do this? In Word I can hold down the CTRL key and hit the apostrophe key twice to accomplish that function.

You can also put the apostrophe in twice... '' ... Excel will only display one of them in the spreadsheet.
