Caveat: Office XP SP 2 (Office XP SP 2)

In other forums, I see reports of lots of problems with SP 2 for Office XP.
Might be wise to wait till the problems get fixed.

Would you mind giving links to those discussions for further elaboration?

And yes I say Elivs there also.

Give us a REAL link to any problem to this release.
There are several 100 if not several 1000 different newsgroups at MS

Re: Caveat: Office XP SP 2 (Office XP SP 2)

It didn't take much to find the discussions even without a link. I just did a search with SP2 as a keyword and found enough to warrant concern. It seems the worst problems are with Outlook, but I confirmed one problem with PowerPoint and have high confidence the same problems exist with objects in Excel and Word.

I'm really disappointed being that SP2 fixed an irritating macro problem I had in Word. But I appreciate the "heads up", Howard! I hope MS will produce a fix for these problems soon or another version of SP2. Surely they are aware of these critical problems and are working on them. (?)

So... what's the best way to stay abreast of this situation. I subscribe to several MS news services, but what is the best for this situation?

Best way is to follow the relevant newsgroups in microsoft.public.office.*.

Also lots of reports show up in other groups asserting that SP 2 affects something or other.

I find a lot for Windows 2000 SP2 and Office 2000 SP2, but the ones I find are more less instructions and information about Office 2002 (XP) SP2.
When reading these items make sure that it applies to Office 2002 (XP) and not any of the other releases.

No, they were for XP. It wasn't difficult to filter the others out. Did you sort them in order of date? There were lots with problems of installing and network problems, but the ones that had an impact on me was in the apps themselves. Here's a few links...

Re: Caveat: Office XP SP 2 (Office XP SP 2)

Well, good news! It seems one major SP2 kink has been tracked down to a conflict with a Norton's AV option. With SP2, embedded objects such as Excel in Word or a graph in Ppt are uneditable. Clicking on them produces an ugly error code.

The workaround fix (until Nortons and MS get in sync) is to disable the option (under Misc) in Nortons for MS Office Plug Ins. The objects work normally without this enabled.

With that out of the way, I'd still like to hear about the Outlook problems many are having. I wonder if that is a Norton's problem as well.

Re: Caveat: Office XP SP 2 (Office XP SP 2)

That's got nothing to do with SP 2.
It's been a problem ever since NAV had an Office Plug-In for NAV 2000.

Hmmm. Well, it sure is raising its ugly head now that all those folks installed SP2. I didn't have conflicts with it before SP2 either. And I never had a problem with it in Nav 2000 with O97 or OXP. Not that I doubt it had some sort of problems somewhere.

The problems arise with OLE in certain circumstances, not in all cases.

I'm hearing SP2 also breaks links (in PowerPoint for one). Disable the NAV option restores the feature.

So, these OLE conflicts with a specific NAV option aside, what do you see as concerns about SP2, if any? How do you feel about the complaints of SP2 crashing Outlook?

It is NAV that breaks the OLE in PPT, not SP 2.
