Delete Msg on IMAP Server (6.00.2600.000)

I am looking into setting up an email account on a web-based site but I still want to read and send messages via Outlook Express. If I use an IMAP connection to the email server, can I keep messages in my OE Inbox without having to have a copy on the server? I know that I can set it up this way with a POP connection but the cheaper mailboxes at www.fastmail.ml only allow an IMAP connection.

Thanks,
Bill Wilson

Only if the web base account has been set up by the provider to do this. MOST do NOT.

I can not access "www.fastmail.ml" site not found, so I can not help in finding out if they support Outlook access or not.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Delete Msg on IMAP Server (6.00.2600.000)

Dave, I misspelled that web site name! It is www.fastmail.fm and it definitely is set up to allow Outlook Express to use IMAP access in the free and cheapest account types and either IMAP or POP3 in the more expensive accounts. If I sign up for the free account or the cheapest account where I must use IMAP, I'm wondering if I will be able to keep messages in OE's Inbox while deleting them on the server so as to not use up the message space allowed there. I'm not sure if your answer is still applicable to this better version of my question or if it was answering a slightly different message.

Thanks,
Bill

yes.. but... you need to move the messages to your local store. you can't leave them in the imap inbox as shown in OE, you need ot drag and drop them to the default group of folders (you can create new folders in the default group)

Thanks Mary J. I have the impression that action just puts the messages in a Delete folder (or some similar name) and they still occupy space on the server. Do you know if that is true?

Thanks,

I think you need to recheck the web page, it states as follows:

Re: Delete Msg on IMAP Server (6.00.2600.000)

Dave, I believe that list agrees exactly with what I stated in my message! (By 'cheapest' I was referring to the account with the one-time $14.95 charge.) That is the kind of account I signed up for yesterday and I'm trying to decide whether or not to sign up for a Full account in order to be able to get POP access. I don't plan to access the account through the web very often. Almost all of my access with be through Outlook Express so I want to make sure that there is some reasonable thing I can do in OE that will completely remove messages from the mail server without removing them from OE. I have the impression that dragging a message in OE from the IMAP Inbox to a local OE folder only moves the message on the server into the Delete folder (or something equivalent) and doesn't actually remove it from the server. If that is the case, then I'll need to use POP access so the messages will actually be removed from the server. If you know the answer to that, I'm listening!

Thanks,
Bill

"cheapest" to me was the one.

Re: Delete Msg on IMAP Server (6.00.2600.000)

OK, I see the problem! I didn't remember the labels they gave to each access level. Even the level labeled "Free" isn't really free -- it requires paying a joining fee -- and the "Guest" level is the only really free one. So, when I said the free and cheapest levels I was referring to the levels that it turns out are labeled "Guest" and "Free". Sorry about the confusion.

Re: Delete Msg on IMAP Server (6.00.2600.000)

I just did a little test. I IMAP'd to my POP3 mailbox (shhhh!!) and retrieved the new message headers. These appeared in the Inbox folder for the IMAP server. I dragged one message into a local folder called Tester. It automatically marked the message for deletion in the server-based Inbox list. I opened the message and the text was there. Then I highlighted all the spam messages in the Inbox and pressed Delete, which marked them for deletion. Then I clicked the Purge toolbar button, and they all went away. No Deleted Items folder was created on the server. However, a reply that I sent to the message in the Tester folder ended up on the server's Sent Items folder. I dragged that to the local folder and purged it without first opening the sent message. I then opened the sent message and the contents were there. Last but not least, I went to my POP client (Outlook) and checked for new mail, and there was nothing there.

So... from this my understanding is that (1) yes, you can save messages but you move or copy them into a folder under Local Folders; (2) the message bodies are downloaded automatically when you do this, it's a one-step operation; and (3) nothing is deleted from the server until you Purge. (Possibly there is a way to purge after a given age, but I didn't explore that.)

Hope this helps, and that my deductions are correct!

OE has a purge on close option somewhere - Outlook does not and i hear about it all the time when users switch from OE to OL for IMAP access.

Re: Delete Msg on IMAP Server (6.00.2600.000)

Thanks for the detailed investigation. That's exactly the kind of thing I was wondering about. Also, I was worried that in order to do the Purge to actually free-up space on the server I would have to use web access to the account. However, since posting my message I've run across a statement that says that there is a Purge command in OE's Edit menu when you have an IMAP account. So, I guess I really could use an IMAP account with OE and not need to use web access at all if I didn't want to. It does require some extra manual dragging of messages from one folder to another. In any case, I've decided to go ahead and pay a little (less than $20 per year) and get an account where I can use POP3 access. My www.FastMail.fm account is working fine and I've gotten some pretty impressive support in their forum too.

Thanks,
Bill

Mary J: That purge on close option would have been a good solution to the problem I had in mind. I was afraid that I would have to use web access to do the purge. I've decided I really like POP3 access anyway so I'm going that way.
