Communication icon in system tray

All of a sudden the communication/modem icon (this is the icon that looks like two connected and offset computer screens whose screens flicker when the communication-modem connection is made/working) in my system tray is gone even though my system is still connected to my ISP. Earlier this evening I was browsing some web pages and noticed the system was getting a bit sluggish. When I clicked the "Back" button my on my browser (MSIE 6.0)nothing seemed to be happening. Then I noticed the icon was no longer visible in the system tray. I'm not sure but I think I MIGHT have double clicked on it when I first noticed the sluggishness.

Everything seems to be working fine. Any ideas about the disappearing icon?

Oh, I'm running Windows 98, 2nd Ed.; Outlook 98, and MSIE 6.0.; 56k U.S. Robotics modem.

Hi Steve

In the last couple of weeks I've had the same problem with the disappearing icon, although I can't relate it to any slowdown with my system.
I'm using WindowsME and Mozilla1.1.
I've also found that everything seems to be working OK, just no icon. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Try looking at the properties for the connection. To do this, open up the Dial Up Networking folder and right-click on the connection icon, choosing Properties with the left mouse button. Although I don't have 98SE handy, I believe there is a checkbox to "show icon when connected" or something very similar. I know that checkbox exists in later versions of Windows but I cannot recall offhand if Windows 98 has the option - still, worth a look.

You're a gem. After reading your reply I felt pretty stupid for not checking that folder first. I had checked several other but failed to check the correct one. Right track.......just the wrong train. I'm still curious as to how the problem started in the first place but I'll not dwell on it. No harm, no foul.

Yeah, I think the best course of action at times is to just shrug and forget as best you can. Flaky, forgetful settings have been a computer thing since their inception, and with today's millions of lines of code and infinite hardware configurations....well, you get the idea. Glad it worked!!
