Mixed versions of Office (2000 and 2002)

We've got Office 2000 Pro on our desktop, and we've just also bought a laptop which came with Works, including Word 2002. Reading the licence for our Office 2000 it appears to be legitimate to install it on the laptop too. Will it work to install the components of Office 2000 apart from Word, but use the 2002 version of Word, or will there be a conflict of some kind?

Two versions of Office, or its components, cannot FULLY co-exist on the same bootable system. Even MSFT Warens about this, but in a mealy mouthed way, in KB articles.

Might complicate matters further since Word 2002 is part of Works, not Office.

Also, what version of Outlook do you have on the laptop?
Two versions of Outlook cannot be installed in the same bootable system.

We don't have any version of Outlook on the laptop - only Outlook Express. And as far as Word 2002 goes, the Lounge seems to have said before that the version of Word 2002 in Works is just the same as any other.

It may be, but it is installed under Works, not under Office, so I do not know how that affects integration/removal/installing updates.

In any case, you still have the conflict problems due to use of common libraries, etc.

Your best bet would be to uninstall Works, or at least Word 2002, if you plan to install Office 2000. Howard is correct in that you are likely to run into conflicts between libraries even if you install them in different folders, especially if you install Office 2000 after Word 2002 and it's components have been installed.

Microsoft used to say something like, "tho it is possible to install multiple versions of Office, you may run into the following problems ...".

Now they say something like "Microsoft does not recommend installing multiple versions of Office. If you do, these are some of the problems ...".

Note the above are not quotes, just my paraphrasing of the MSFT mealy mouthed articles on multiple installs.

If you really do need to have multiple versions of Office, create a multiple boot system and put a different vesion of Office in each.

I have been running Office 2000 and 2002 on my WIndows XP without any problems for about 4 months now. Outlook cannot (or will not) exist in both versions at the same time. I have a dual boot system, but do not want the hassle of going between the two whenever I have to assist someone who is using one of the Office versions. I saw the MS disclaimer and promptly ignored it. Just my experiences... <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

My experience matches this as well. We run 15 machines with WinXP and both Office 2000 and XP so that we can answer questions about and teach both versions. The only trick was that we weren't able to have Outlook running in both versions.
