Minimise space of a table (word97SR2)

Has anyone written a macro to minimise the vertical space of a table in Word?

This is not Table, Autoformat, AutoFit.

This is a means of adjusting the column widths to reduce the number of wrapped lines to the minimum possible.

In the simplest case (a 2-column table) it would mean that any lateral adjustment of the column separator, to the left or to the right, would increase the vertical space occupied by the table on the page.

More complex cases (3-column, 4-column etc) would be, well, more complex for sure.

Table > AutoFit > AutoFit Content seems to do a remarkably good job, considering the complexity, and that as a background process.

I just did some tests, which worked even better than I had expected.

As a "sanity check", I built a table that had a wildly differing amount of content in the different columns.
The column widths adapted to minimize the amount of lines.

Then I added new rows, and pasted the content of the previous rows so that each column contained the same cells, but in a different order.

When I was finished, each column had the same width.

Did you come across an examle where AutoFit failed (badly)?

Klaus, thanks for the response, and the pointers to which my experiments might move.

No, I had not come across a specific example where I could do "better" than AutoFit in terms of minimising vertical space.

Over the years I've been aware of three things

    1) The Word97SR2 help files contain pap such as "To make the column width fit the contents, click AutoFit." with little definition of the goals, objectives or algorithm of AutoFit.

    2) I feel (but can't quote) that there are times when I've used AutoFit, said "That's not good enough", and achieved a better fit by dragging columns

    3) I've had cases where I've AutoFit, keyed in more data, then re-run AutoFit and observed no change at all, followed by an occasion as in (2) above.

These led me to think that maybe the existing (Word97SR2) AutoFit algorithm had aims that weren't necesarily described as "reduce vertical space".

I should trot off and devise a table that can be reduced in vertical space after application of AutoFit, and then report back.

Of course, I was also trawling to find out if there were any like-minded souls who had, from time to time, pondered on AutoFit.

    Thanks again.
