Query criteria (Access2000)

Am working with a fairly large DB, 50MB, and need to select groups of records based upon the value of one field. This field is a text field which contains only numbers. Normally I merely enter the value I want to extract and the query works fine, except on this one field. Nothing I've read in any of several manuals indicates a problem but when I enter a value in the criteria row, I get a blank datasheet. If I use any of the comparison operators, I get the complete listing. I tried to convert the field to a numeric field but receive an error message that insufficient disk space or memory exists. System has 20 GB hard drive and 384 MB RAM. Am at a loss as to how to proceed. Suggestions gratefully accepted.

Since your field is a text field, you need to put quotes (") around your criteria to make it work. As to changing the field to numeric, you may need to create a new empty table and run an append query to convert the data. Also, do you know what service release your Access is at - there were some weird things that happened with large tables that were fixed in SR-1.

I have not got SR-1 yet, how do I get it? Can I just download it from MS?

Yes, it can be downloaded from the MS site, thought it is something on the order of 50MB or more, so you will want to use a high speed connection. Make sure you have your original 2000 CD available when you try to install it. In fact there is a great deal of info about how to install the SR on the MS web site as well.

You are correct - I looked at the site Francois found twice last night and couldn't find the size. But it's there now 26 to 40MB - if you are using Access it will be closer to 40MB.

I tried using double quotes but was unsuccessful. I finally did create another table and modified the contents of that field from text to numeric which enabled me to filter on that field. Thank you for your assistance. By the way, I had updated Access 2000 last week.
