Recommendations for large-file ZIP program?

Could anyone recommend a free ZIP program which will cope with
command-line input (no GUI requirement, thank you very much!)
creating large archives of at least 500 MB
and at least 5000 files
and which can make the resulting archive self-extracting.

I have been amazed by the prices that PKWare want to charge for their self-extracting bit! And WinZip requires even more files for their command line tool than for their GUI functions!

    Try GZip.

Sorry, I didn't realise that was so important.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I see no sign of self-extraction/SFX?

But your URL also included a reference to UNZIP/ZIP, which does appear on first glance to include this feature!

Yes, otherwise I would use WinZip - for which we have an intergalactic licence!

AFAIK, Gzip is a different algorithm than Zip.

John, I'm confused, I thought there was a Winzip Self-Extractor Personal that is built-in to the basic product?

[Edit - oops, it's not command line, is it? Sorry!]

Check out the Archiver Comparison Test site http://compression.ca/act-win.html for a list of archivers and their features.

I suppose with "self extraction" you don't necessarily need ZIP format?

    Hi John

I don't know about the "command line" capabilities, but you might check out Ultimate Zip.
It's got to be one of the best compression programs and it's .

    Have a Great day!!!

Terry - the compression time and size comparisons are quite fascinating for geek-orientated personages! What an unexpected variation in the results... Sadly he does not include "Command-line Interface" as one of the features of each archiver, which was one of my four Criteria!

Re: Recommendations for large-file ZIP program?

Performance depends on the algorithm used and implementation tricks.

I did a similar analysis for QuickSort a few months ago.
If I ever recover from the shock, I'll post the results, maybe even a demo of the test.
    Results were quite surprising.

There is an indication (sort of)..
If the table mentions DOS - it has to have a command line interface!

Plus, there are links for any you want to read more about.

I am deliberately avoiding giving a specific recommendation as I haven't used any of the "free" ones in anger - either command line or GUI.
