Caption Numbering Problem (2k SR1)

Hi,

The attached screen-shot shows how when inserting a caption, Word gives the correct number in the dialogue box.
But when inserted messes up somehow.

How can I get it to insert the same no. it shows in the dialogue box?

This 0 should be the number from the most recent level 1 heading. Does your document have numbered level 1 headings?

Yes it does, but they don't start at zero!
Plus thid caption is way down in the document.

My caption problems started when I started using Office2k instead of XP.
How can I fix this problem under Word2k?

Select the inserted line, press Shift+F9 and post what you see. (You generally cannot paste field codes, you will need to re-type it.)

Re: Caption Numbering Problem (2k SR1)

For resources, I'd start with online help. If you search caption, the first entry is troubleshooting:

Captions aren't numbered correctly.
If you deleted captions - Caption numbers in the rest of the document might be out of sequence. You should manually update the captions.

If you inserted captions in text boxes - Caption numbers might be duplicated or out of sequence. This is because you can anchor only one text box to a specific paragraph, and you can include only one caption in that text box. Also, you can include only one caption in a series of linked text boxes. If necessary, move multiple captions into separate text boxes, move each text box anchor to a separate paragraph, and/or unlink the text boxes. Then manually update the captions.

If you grouped a caption with a floating object - Caption numbers might appear as zeroes (0). You need to ungroup the caption and the object. Then manually update the captions.

If you look up styleref and sequence you can find details on the switches for the relevant field codes. It appears that use of 1*s to refer to Heading*1 in the STYLEREF field is undocumented. But not difficult to determine after a bit of playing around.

There's something wierd with my doc.
Look how the entries appear twice in the screen-shot, but they only actually exist once!

What shall I do?!

Well, you stumped me. I never use the cross-references dialog. I assume it is picking up everything in the Caption style for that list, but actually, I have no way of know what it is doing. The only way I can imagine a caption duplicating in the dialog and not in the document is if you have track changes on (but with changes not showing), deleted it, and recreated it, so that in fact, it is there twice. But again, I don't use that dialog, so it could happen for other reasons.

I'd be willing to take a look at your file.
