    Just some questions:

Could you attach the file (zipped) here?

    Does the workbook contain macro's?

Probably, validation has been set for the cell(s).

Select such a cell, and select Data/Validation...
In the first tab, you can restrict the kind of input that is allowed. In the second tab, you can edit the message the user sees when the cell is selected (this is probably what you describe in your post). In the third tab, you can edit the error message that is displayed when the user enters a value that doesn't conform to the restriction.

Y-i-p-p-e-e HansV. I can see now why you are a WMVP, and thank you pieterse for your interest.
Bearing in mind that I only posted the query at 12:49, and you had both answered by 12:57 shows what a rapid and valid help line this Forum is.
I had been plodding around all the menu options all morning to try and uncover this feature, which was Data Validation.
    Thank you gentlemen.

In my setup, validation shows greenish message windows. Your yellow ones confused me a bit.
