Office XP Service Pack 2 Installation Problem (Office XP SP2)

I downloaded Office XP Service Pack 2 and have tried to install it and it won't take. First it asked me to put in the Office CD w/ Outlook on it which I did. Then it started "Gathering information about Word" and said "The expected version of the product was not found on your system." I have a genuine, non-pirated copy of Office XP Developer, which has been registered w/ Microsoft over the phone. Any ideas/suggestions?

Chris

Did you have SP1 installed? In some cases, the previous SP has to be installed before the latest one will install, although I haven't tried SP2 for OXP, so I can't say for sure that is is one of those cases.

Thanks for answering. Yes I do have SP1 installed. Any other suggestions? I'm not even sure how/who to contact at Microsoft to ask about this.

Did you install any Office program after SR-1 (for example Publisher)?

In that case, that program isn't updated to SR-1 yet (even though it will say it is), and you'd have to install SR-1 again before SR-2.

Re: Office XP Service Pack 2 Installation Problem (Office XP SP2)

Chris--
I had a variation on the problem that Klaus describes and very similar to yours. I had installed SP1 soon after I installed Office. I have 3 CD's--Office XP, Media (Clip Art, ect.) and Publisher.

I kept getting an error that said essentially that the "Office Hotfix Installer" was broken (I had been prompted to have the CD ready.) Finally I called and got help from the Microsoft Office Setup team in Redmond. I'll paste in a summary of what we did from the emailed case notes I got from Microsoft. Essentially fixing the problem involved 1) Uninstalling Office- 2) Going to the Registry and deleting all associated files 3) Going to the Windows Programs Folder and deleting all Installer Folders associated with Office (with the Installer Icon). Essentially, it was explained to me that the use of separate CD's for Media and Publisher corrupt the SP2 Installer and this sounds much like what Claus is referencing[b]. This fixed the problem for me and the specialist indicated they hoped to fix the problem in Office 11 so that the CD's won't interfere with the SP2 Hotfix Install. The steps we took to fix this problem are included below. Hope they can be of help.

Good luck,

Sorry to be so long responding to your post. I groaned reading it and dreaded the uninstall etc. I finally had the three hours spare to try it and it worked flawlessly. They should make this string a FAQ. I had exactly the problem "defrag" described and that fix worked well. Thanks for the help.

Re: Office XP Service Pack 2 Installation Problem (Office XP SP2)

SX2--

Glad to have the feedback, and really glad it worked. I share and feel your pain. If I see the problem on some MSN group, I'll use it there, or better still I'll send it to one of the Office MVP's who troll groups trying to help.

It is really frustrating to buy what is a worthwhile and pretty indispensable piece of software that is not cheap for the individual on a desktop--and go to a number of MS presentations about how wonderful it is and how innovative Office XP is, and then to get tripped up simply trying to install the service pack that you feel you have no choice but to get installed. The up side was that the guy that helped me was super bright, and gave me some other pearls. Some of these support guys are only sophomores in college and already they are specializing in Office Support.

He said they are definitely targeting this glitch which happens under two or three circumstances in Office 11, which I have been reading is starting Beta testing this week. But they should have fixed it by now.

I had another problem with Word where it just wouldn't open up all of a sudden. After trying everything I could think of and pumelling the KB for help, newsgroups, and the Office Website---I called MS. I worked with a guy for 8 hours--I couldn't believe the guy's stamina. We installed and uninstalled serveral times--we started hammering the registry changing strings and deleting--nothing worked.

Finally, and I have seen this phenomenon before --I mean the quick thing that finally fixes something (with Win Media Player)-- he had me go to tools, click on the Com Add-Ins, and drag that up to the Word toolbar. It was the last thing he could think of to try. And after trying so many things for hours, it worked instantly. I still wish I could understand the physiology of or the reasons behind why that fixed a corrupt Word that wouldn't open up.

Good luck--hopefully it will be smooth sailing now.
