    VKD DEVICE ERROR PREVENTING STARTUP

Edited by <font color=red>WyllyWylly</font color=red> to remove unnecessary carriage returns.

I built a new computer within the last two months, everything was working fine until I installed Xolox (file sharing program) from Cnet.com. I shut it down and have been unable to bring it up ever since this is a jumbled description of what I have tried. Initial startup goes fine, Memory, finds both Primary & Slave HD's, and both DVD Rom and CD/RW drives. Finds all PCI... all in all it goes fine until loading windows. I did a "step-by-step" startup and I can get to the point of loading all win drivers. Sometime between this point and windows actually starting I get an error message, either "error reading info on C: drive" About, Retry, Ignore, Fail. No matter if I choose Retry or Ignore another message pops up. Error while loading VKD drivers (sometimes this message won't even type all the way out?) Windows protection error, please restart windows. Something to that effect. It will do the same thing in Safe mode. I attempted to try it hrough the command prompt. I can "read" the info on the hard drives ( C: & D: ) but I am unable to access the DVD or CD/RW (disk or not). I was going to try to re-install windows but I cannot do so if I can't use my CDROM. I do have a 98 Boot Disk/Start up disk here that I will try to use tonight.

No idea why this happened. I have loaded one new piece of software. Xolox(?) file sharing software from Cnet.com/download.com. After installing this and using it, is when I had this problem. I attempted to run the uninstall from DOS but you cannot do this and by just deleting it, it won't remove the drivers and will leave recalls in the registry. I tried the boot disk and can use the CDROM DRIVE but when I attempt to reinstall Win98 it does a SCANDISK and attempts a SCANREG at which point it freezes up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: VKD DEVICE ERROR PREVENTING STARTUP

    Hi cdem

You could try response #2 here: http://computing.net/windows95/wwwbo...um/106804.html.
Or....wait a while, depends on your patience, and see if anyone else comments on this "response #2", or suggests something else.
If you do try this fix, be careful.....you will be editing the registry!!

    Have a Great day!!!

Re: VKD DEVICE ERROR PREVENTING STARTUP

A Google search for "Error while loading VKD drivers" yielded this site
    http://www.spacewalker.com/english/support...nProtectErr.htm
which indicates that the problem is with the Virtual Keyboard Device driver (VKD) and offers further info and some links to possible solutions.
This seems to be a rather tricky problem. I hope that this is some help.

Re: VKD DEVICE ERROR PREVENTING STARTUP

I attempted to edit the registry also, the screen comes up and says that it is checking, then goes back to the C: prompt still on the blue screen. If I attempt to run it again it freezes up. Scanreg and regedit both freeze and will not work properly. I am going to attempt "response 2" this evening. I will attempt to copy these files to a floppy before deleting them. I know that I am not the first... am I? Thanks for the input and I will keep you posted (no pun intended).

    Signed,

You might want to visit this site and poke around http://www.xolox.nl/
I got this little tid-bit... "CursorXP and other 3rd party Cursor Pointers are known to cause XoloX to crash, if this is the case Uninstall CursorXP and your problems should be solved." here

Re: VKD DEVICE ERROR PREVENTING STARTUP

I just wanted to post a reply/status to this post. I thank everyone for their help. My problem is/was fixed. This is the solution that I found to the problem. I didn't loose anything "that" important and had no problems. It was that simple. For anyone else with the same problems as I explained I would recommend trying this first:

"You have trouble with your Registry,
boot to a command prompt then type:
    cdwindows
    attrib -r -h user.dat
    attrib -r -h system.dat
    del user.dat
    del system.dat
    reboot your computer, fixed."

Response 2 noted above. Thanks again and I hope this helps others.

Hmmm... doesn't that just force your registry to be rebuilt using the Last Known Good configuration?
