    Page Numbering again (Word 2000 SR1)

    I have a document 26 pages long including a cover sheet. I have started the numbering on the first physical page at 0 and suppressed it from printing, as this is a cover page. The first page of text starts at 1. This is fine and what I want. When I insert page X of Y in the footer, the last page registers as

    Mike, you must use nested fields for this:

    { = { NUMPAGES } - 1 }

    You mustn't type the brackets yourself. You can insert field brackets by typing Ctrl+F9, and of course Insert/Field... will insert them too.

    Hans
    Thanks for prompt reply but this is what I get when I press Alt F9 to convert the Fields to text. All codes wereinserted with Insert Field, except I typed in the -1.

    { = { NUMPAGES } - 1 }

    !Unexpected End of Formula

    Hi Mike:
    Press F9 to update the field. If you use Insert/field... & start with the formula field, & then insert a numpages field inside, you get

    { = { NUMPAGES * MERGEFORMAT } * MERGEFORMAT }

    which will give that error. You should not get the error after updating. I find that it's usually easier to type nested fields.
    Cheers,

    I think it would be better to set up your document properly instead. Here's how:

    Go to your first section. Change the layout of only the first section to Different First Page (File-Page setup, Layout tab)
    Now, set the page numbering in the first section to start at 1, but on the First Page footer, delete it (making sure you don't have Same as Previous on the Section 2 header...

    All your other pages should now work properly. See a bunch of info on headers/footers/section breaks: http://www.thewordexpert.com/newsletters/july2002.doc
    That should keep you out of trouble.

    Good luck!

    Many thanks, a simple right click or F9 (Update Field) and the formula worked a dream
