Office XP won't load on Win 98

Has anyone ever heard or experienced a problem loading Office XP on a Windows 98 Gateway E3600? The install fails while trying to do the core system files update. The same CD loads fine on a Dell Win 98 pc. Office 2000 loads fine on the Gateway pc. I have formatted and reloaded 98, twice. Tried loading from a clean boot (Explorer and systray only running). I have no further ideas, except loading a different OS, though that won't really solve my problem as the PC was sold as win 98. Gateway has no solution either, though I hope they will working to solve the problem, just not quick enough for me.

    Shawn,
Woody himself recommends that you don't even try to run Office XP on anything other than WinXP machine. He wrote an article for either PC Magazine or PC World titled "Install and Run Office XP". He says, "OXP works best on WinXP, period.".
    That's good enough for me.

Re: Office XP won't load on Win 98

I would agree with his recommendation. Win 98 is unstable enough by itself without adding OXP, it is like trying to use the steering and suspension from a Pinto to harness the power of a Ferrari. All that aside, we would use Office 2000 if it were available, but since we are an OEM supplier for Microsoft, we can only get OXP. And since we are reselling the PCs, we are limited by what the customer chooses as their OS. Luckily these are some of the last Win 98 systems. We have been loading OXP on Win 98 systems since January, and this is actually the first major problem we have had so I guess we have been fortunate.

Last night after making the original post, I tried a different 20Gb hard drive and was finally able to get OXP to load. It seems there is either a problem with a batch of Maxtor hard drives that Gateway used, or something with their IDE controller on the motherboard. They are still working on the problem, but since they haven't seen it before, I've ended up doing the testing for them.

I'll let you know how it finally gets resolved, thanks for the reply. Is the article Woody wrote available online anywhere?

I looked last night before I posted, but couldn't find it right off. Fortunately, I have a copy for just such an emergency.
