Can't get into Windows

I've posted a thread on Windows98 about my problem. I now want to copy files in DOS to my CD ROM. It's drastic measures time. I can get the dos prompt C> and list the directories. However, there is no valid drive letter recognised for the CD Rom drive. So, how can I copy my files from C to the CD Rom? Drive A is too small to copy all the files.

Is an alternative solution to remove the hard disc and put it into another computer and read it that way? I'll copy this to the general discussion list as there may be ideas there. Apologies for the cross post. Thanks.

I don't think you will find drivers that can write to a CD and run under DOS. Some backup programs come with drivers that can write to a CD, but these don't let you copy arbitrary files to the CD.

I think your idea of moving the disk to another PC and copying the files is your best chance.

Re: Can't get into Windows

Thank's everyone for the advice on how to bring life back to the C drive. In the end I put it into another machine as drive d and ran that machine's scandisk. It fixed the problem. Funny, but running the C drive scandisk had no effect. So, I have my old disc working. A lesson which raies an important question. What DOS discs do I need for emergencies such as this and what is good software to address this type of problem? Is Norton's Ghost worth having? I want to be prepared for next time corrupt files arise. There will be a next time. Thanks.

I recommend GoBack for all emergencies. It's saved my bacon, among other things, on several occasions.

GoBack is wonderful at letting you recover from a software installation that things up, but it won't protect you from disk corruption.

I always have a Windows 98 Startup floppy disk and a couple more floppies with a set of useful DOS utilities and FPROT AntiVirus scanner in a safe location.

You might also want to head over to Bootdisk.com and check into some of their offerings - I have always hated the RAMDrive that the Windows 98 startup disk creates, useful or not. Having an alternate way to boot up with the tools that you need is always a good thing!

Re: Can't get into Windows

I've always felt that a Startup disk with CD-ROM support was essential to any OS installation. I've not experienced a disk corruption issue (yet), but would have assumed that since GoBack starts before Windows and is DOS based that you could, theoretically, go back to a time before your disk became corrupted and be back up again. I know it works with a virus infection and just assumed that it would work for anything. I'll have to check my documentation and post back.
Thanks for alerting me to this. Assumptions can be dangerous things.

I think that GoBack will only be able to undo intentional changes. Disk corruption caused by flaky oxide, or other hardware sources, needs a different approach.

Re: Can't get into Windows

I stand corrected. I spoke to a friend last night who is a real wizard with all types of computers (Unix, Solaris, DOS) and he set me straight about the disk corruption being a "firmware" issue relating to bad or damaged clusters that GoBack just can't touch because it is strictly a software problem solver. He agrees that a startup disk with CD drivers and some basic utilities is essential.

One other thing you should know for future issues is that you can run Scandisk from a DOS prompt. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q199557 for instructions.
