    Toggle Images (6.0)

My Internet Explorer stopped displaying graphics a couple of days ago. I suspected that the Toggle Images.exe utility from Internet PowerToys was the culprit since it is on my Links toolbar and was easy for me to accidently hit.

Unfortunately, launching it did not solve the problem. I then considered a corrupted file. So I downloaded a fresh copy of PowerToys and re-ran Toggle Images. Still doesn't help.

Is there a registry edit available to fix this?

It's a long shot, but have you checked Tools > Internet Options > Advanced (tab) > Display Images (under Multimedia) - this option must be checked for images to display. If it's not checked, some cached images may still appear, but new one's won't. HTH

    Re: Toggle Images (6.0)

    Hi Zeno:
For what it's worth, I've had the same problem, from time to time---then it goes away. Pressing the Images.exe button in the Links toolbar toggles the setting under Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab/Show pictures checkbox. I agree that it's confusing, because you can't tell whether it's on or off in advance (especially when it's not working).

I read a tip that said the option for Show Pictures is located in the registry at
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerAdvancedOptionsMULTIMEDIAPICTS

and that both the CheckedValue & the DefaultValue should be "Yes" & the "UncheckedValue" should be "No". HOWEVER, I can't recommend making any adjustment to the registry. I could notice no difference in the registry values when I checked & unchecked the Show Pictures box. Sometimes rebooting has helped. Sometimes I've noticed that I have to uncheck the Show Pictures box, close IE, & reopen it, & check the box again. Wish I could be of more help.

Do ANY pictures show at all -- or, are there absolutely NONE?

    Hi Rick:
Actually, it's not happening to me now; it's happening to Zeno. When it does happen, I think I'm not getting any pictures.
    Cheers,

Sorry, Phil -- I was trying to reply to Zeno -- but keep the thread 'linear' -- if you will. I recognize it is not the appropriate method for Woody's forum, but some people feel I have never been too appropriate here and I don't want to let the down. ;-]

I was thinking of the old NIS/NPF problem as well. That reared it's ugly head just after IE6 came out. If the user turns the NPF security settings down to Medium or simply turns off the Norton Firewall, the images reappear. There are threads about this issue in the lounge archives -- but they are quite old now.

The link provided above seems to be incorrect. Here is the link to the MSKB article on Norton's Firewall interfering with images. I will try to locate the archives...

Here is something. You will notice that for this particular poster, the problem was NIS. Others said they used the Repair/Reinstall IE option to fix the problem. People also found the problem did not exist if they upgraded to WinXP-- so an incompatibility issue invloving IE6, Win98, and NIS was theorized. HOWEVER, Microsoft states the problem occurs from Win98 through Win2K, so in reality only WinXP was immune. Let me find Symantec's take on this...

Here is one response from Symantec:

"I apologize for the frustrations with this issue, but the problem
stems from having two programs that are tightly integrated, and then
making a major change to one of them. The upgrade to IE6 is a full
point upgrade, and for NIS to function correctly with it, I recommend
uninstalling and reinstalling Norton Internet Security after
    upgrading to IE6.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance to you in
    regards to Norton Internet Security."

Its really strange. A couple of days ago, none of the "icons" in the lounge were visible, only place markers. Now I can see them. but when I log onto the Dell site, there are no images at all. Could my video card be failing?

Intermittent problems are the hardest to fix...

Is it ONLY the Dell site, or are they other sites? Can you give us links to these sites?

    Hi Zeno--
Pictures are not Displayed on Web Sites Q272306
I know you've been there and its OK. I have had to go and recheck Show Pictures for reasons I wish I knew--can't remember if I used a toggle key without using Power Toys.

Then there's this--the arrow with two angle brackets on the links bar:
Web Accessories Functionality Turns Off Image Downloading Q223050

And this if you installed Norton's Internet Security after you upgraded to IE6, but if you installed XP without an upgrade, this wouldn't apply. Uninstalling and Reinstalling NIS fixes this.
I never underestimate the power of Symantec to impact a myriad of things--I keep running into more documented instances.

You Cannot View Some Images on Web Pages After You Install IE6 Q309287

Problems Displaying Images in Internet Explorer Q181836 This one doesn't say it applies to 6, but it suggests
at Options>Advanced, clicking the smooth scrolling box and trying to lower the hardware acceleration slider in Properties in My Computer. For these versions not 6 it suggests also tweaking displays.
May not apply, but if they help only takes a few seconds.

Although the problem has been getting "better" (less frequent), I found a more complete solution. I convinced my wife that the computer had reached the end of its usefull life. I am now ordereing a brand new system with all the bells and whistles.

Anyway, thanx for all the helpful advise.
