    Missing DLL ? (XP sp1)

My wife's notebook, when booting XP, stops with a message abbout a .dll file that can't be found. File name is: "babelE.dll". Any idea what this relates to? Or how I stop the error message? After clicking OK, XP continues to finish booting normally.

Open MSConfig and see if there is a entry with "babelE" in it. It may have been a program that was installed on the machine and since been deleted.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

That was it Dave, thanks, I should have thought of that.

I now notice (not that I think it's a related problem) that when her machine shuts down, it tries to save Explorer.exe, gets to the end of the save, then says the program is not responding. A few seconds later Windows shuts down. Any idea what's up with that?

Tries to save EXPLORER.EXE? That sounds suspicious as all get out to me. I'd run a thorough virus scan, and make sure you lock the system down. It sure isn't normal behavior, and Windows, to my knowledge, never tries to "save" EXPLORER.EXE. You quite possibly have a worm/backdoor/trojan/other nasty on the PC. Sadly, searching the web for babeIE.dll turns up nothing - take care and be cautious.

Sorry, she misread it to me. It says: "Ending program", and does get to the end of the creeping bar before saying that it's not responding. XP then checks out by itself, with no interaction to the buttons offered.
What animal might that be? She says it's been going on for 2-3 months; the machine is 11 months old.

    Bill,

It sounds like, after a quick search, that it's part of a piece of software called CommonNames.

Have a look at this http://and.doxdesk.com/parasite/CommonName.html.

They don't think too highly of the CommonNames software.

Given Bryan's post, you may want to run, not walk, to LavaSoft's website and order up a heaping helping of AdAware. Ugh, CommonNames is a parasite if ever there was. I don't know that AdAware will stomp on this beastie but it sure can't hurt!

Bill, You may want to look at this MSKB article:
Q308029 - Resources to Help Troubleshoot Shutdown Problems in Windows XP.
There are many links to other articles for various shutdown problems.

Re: Missing DLL ? (XP sp1)

I tracked it down some too; seems it was loaded with BearShare (the daughter who did that never touches my machine, and I think my wife will be a bit more careful now too), which I stepped in and whacked about a month ago, along with what appeared to come in with it. CommonNames was one of them. I guess if I just delete the startup command that errors out when looking for the program, that should take care of it.
Unless you have some more good advice on this...

Good advice - I use AdAware on a regular basis, even have it as a scheduled task.
I think my wife will too, after this!!
