    Is there a way to display recently used files? (XP)

    I have a spreadsheet used for quotes. Each quote has it's own quote number which is sequential to the one before it. However, I often forget which number I ended with, and have to open windows explorer, navigate to my quotes folder, check the filename (which includes the quote #) to see what number I ended with.

    Is there any way to have a small toolbar, or maybe a small window that shows the filenames of recently used files?

    Any file saved from within Excel ends up in Excel's own MRU list on the bottom of the File menu. Top one is the last one saved.

    If the MRU doesn't do what you want, see also <!post=this thread,108145>this thread<!/post>. (And I think there was a more recent thread on the same topic, but I can't get a "Search" hit.)

    Another idea would be to load up your number automaticaly, see <!post=this thread, 171133>this thread<!/post>

    Can you be a little more specific as to where this code goes and how exactly to use it?

    Dim lCounter as Long
    Open "CataCounter.txt" For Input As #1
    Input #1, lCounter
    lCounter = lCounter + 1
    Close #1
    DoEvents
    Open "CataCounter.txt" For Output As #1
    Write #1, lCounter
    Close #1

    I would either attach the code to a button on the Template used for the quotes or to a toolbar button. You will need to create the Counter.txt file with the number you wish to start counting from.

    Private Sub btn AddQuoteNumber_Click()
    Dim lCounter As Long
    Dim fName As Variant
    Open "CataCounter.txt" For Input As #1
    Input #1, lCounter
    lCounter = lCounter + 1
    Close #1
    DoEvents
    Open "CataCounter.txt" For Output As #1
    Write #1, lCounter
    Close #1

    ' set quote number in sheet
    Worksheets("sheet1").Range("a1") = lCounter

    End Sub

    I would also add a button to automaticaly save the quote using the quote reference number generated.

    Private Sub btnSaveQuote_Click()
    SaveAs ("CataQuote" & Worksheets("sheet1").Range("a1") & ".xls")
    End Sub

    Obviously you will need to adjust the paths and references to suit your needs
