    Scroll bar (Word 2000Win98/SR-1)

My question is...I have Word 2000 and my vertical scroll bar works smoothly so that I can drag it up and down and the page moves with the dragging motion.

However, a friend of mine also has Word 2000, but her scroll bar moves in jerks. She can't drag the rectangle button so that she can move the page up and down at the same time. She has to click on open spaces in the scroll bar. She also gets a little icon with four arrows and a dot in the middle when she moves her cursor over the scroll bar.

Any ideas or suggestions? She is very computer literate and it this is driving her nuts, especially since I can move my scroll bar the way she wants hers to.

    Hi Marilyn:
In normal view, the vertical scrollbar will only work smoothly (& show page numbers as you drag the button) if:
    1. You turn on Tools/Options/General tab & check the box for background repagination, -or-
    2. You do something that repaginates the document in normal view, such as:
    a. Switching to Print Layout & back to normal view.
    b. Print the document.
    c. Update a TOC (Table of Contents)

Your friend should be able to scroll in Print Layout view, whether that option is ticked or not. Note that having background repagination ticked in normal view may slow Word down, depending on the size of the document, number & size of tables in the document, & number of other applications running. Depending upon your system, this may or may not be noticeable.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Scroll bar (Word 2000Win98/SR-1)

    Hi Phil,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Personally I always use print layout view for several reasons. I do use normal view when I want to see the text or numbers enlarged, but I guess not enough to notice that the scroll bar won't scroll smoothly up and down. I use a lot of graphics in forms I create, and normal view doesn't show them. I need to create balance in my work so like the wysiwyg capability of print layout.

Thanks so much for solving the mystery :-)
