Favorites Search? (IE6)

Would like to know if there exists a way to search an extensive 'Favorites' to locate an entry in the drop down menu.

Not that I know of.

Could you create a shortcut to a search pre-defined to run in your ...Documents and SettingsUsernameFavorites Folder?

I don't think you are referring to this (image below) -- instead, I suspect you mean doing it "on the fly" from the drop down menu. I don't think there is a way to 'search' a drop down list, although you can jump item to item based on their first letter. Just open the drop down list and repetitively hit any letter and you will get the idea.

(Leif beat me to it -- I was busy creating the image!) ;-]

Bruce--
With Favorites Home Page you can Navigate your Favorites like a web page with all of the favorites on a simple clickable page that can be miniminized to your task bar and dragged around, plus your very own color-coordinated scheme with several choices of background and letters; color profiles are cookie stored, folder links, heading links, creation date, previous/next. I also notice that having the favorites as a "favorites task pain" slows browsing. And if that's not enough the format is RGB value in a hexidecimal notation--one of my all time favorite formats--does this do it for you? Take a look at the screen shots here. And who said 'there's no free lunch'? It's free.

Yes, I was referring to locating files from the browser while it is open viewing a page. The image you posted above - is that's Win 98 isn't it?

I know about the the first letter routine, but I have a load of favs I have yet to cull, edit, and sort, so the list of folders and listings is voluminous. I need to locate a fav by a word that may not be the first one in the sentence. Most of the time the favs are saved with some caption or motto or url. Scrolling through the list is cumbersome.

Yes, Win98, but the concept is the same.

Sorry, but I know of no way to directly search a drop-down box.

Hi Bruce:
Let me expand on Leif's idea from <post#=175597>post 175597</post#>. I have Win98SE so if you have a different OS, the steps might vary a little. I started to post this, then deleted it because I hadn't noticed that you wanted to search on something other than the beginning of the name. Basically, I think you can only bring up a Find/Files & folders box to search quickly.

1. Click an empty spot on the taskbar & press F3. This brings up "Find/Files & Folders"
2. Make sure that the "look in" box is your primary hard drive & that "include subfolders" is ticked.
3. Type

Favorites

in the "named" box & search. This will give you a list of all your Favorites folders.
4. In the search results, double click the one that contains your shortcuts.
5. Now press Ctrl+F (or F3) to bring up the "Find/Files & Folders" dialog box again.
6. The "look in" box should now have the path to your Favorites folder & "Include subfolders" checked.
7. In the "Named" box, either leave it blank or type "*.*" (no quotes).
8. On the Options menu, make sure that "save results" isn't selected (unless you don't update things frequently).
9. On the Advanced tab, you can narrow the search to "Internet Shortcut".
10. Run the search & you should get all your files (or all internet shortcuts) in the Favorites folder, & nothing else.
11. On the File menu, click Save search. This puts a shortcut to the search on your desktop.
12. Drag it to the Favorites folder.
13. While it's selected, press F2 & rename it. Start the name with an exclamation point, & if you sort your Favorites menu alphabetically, the search is likely to be at the top

Phil ~

You are a prince! This works just fantastic when there are over 1054 favs

Thank you for your thoroughness and the laying out of easy to follow steps. You deserve a star post for this.

Your welcome, Bruce. 1054 URLs. You spend much too much time on the computer. Have you ever seen that small yellow ball up in the sky (don't look directly at it)? It means you can go outside now.
