Folder freeze (XPP)

I have a folder in 'My Documents' that holds GIF images. When I access that folder in the thumbnail view, it has begun freezing up. It only does so on that view option. It freezes so regular and must be shut down via Task Manager that now I am forced to use XnView to peruse and then go back and select a file in the list or tile view.

What might cause this to start happening??

Bruce, When you use Task Manager is the task 'not respondong' or is it using all of the CPU? Have you been adding images to the folder? Could one be corrupt? I believe that the file containing the pics for explorer is thumbs.db (or something close). You could try moving it to a different folder to have explorer recreate it as it too might be corrupt.

Good point Joe, I've had a few occasions where I search for thumbs.db system-wide and clean them all out - there doesn't seem to be an easier way to refresh those little caches and I've found that some folders will display incorrect previews or none at all. By folder in this case I'm referring to the thumbnail of a sub-folder in the right hand pane of Explorer, which usually shows four smaller thumbs to show you the contents.

Certainly, Bruce, wiping the thumbs.db file from that folder, and perhaps all others, is a good idea - since you've stated that it only happens in Thumbnail view. Can you try to access the folder using Filmstrip view and see what happens?

    Joe ~

I think that was the trick. I wiped the thumbs.db file out. But another thing I did that may or may not have made a difference in this case was right-click on that particular folder>'Properties'>'Customize' tab> and in the section that says 'What kind of folder do you want' you can change 'Use this folder type as a template' and I changed the selection from 'Photo Album (best for fewer files)' to 'Pictures (best for many files)'.

    Mark ~

I had already changed it by the time I read your reply, so don't know what occurs in Filmstrip view. Other files with images seem to be okay in that view. But I tried deleted the thumbs.db file (allowing it to rebuild itself) in other folders with images and noticed immediate improvement in opening/viewing.

Well, gentleman, I guess that wasn't the trick.

They load a little faster now, but once they all load in thumbnail view, the window freezes (....not responding). Mark, I tried the Filmstrip view and it seems to be okay, but don't use it often.

Might not be a bad idea to run a repair on Windows then - Filmstrip is useless if you have a large number of pictures, and I don't particularly care for it anyway. The thumbs are very nice to have, so if they's broke....with no easy solution....a repair can only help.

Okay, uhhhh, I think I got it right this time

I thought I might have to do a repair, but then later I was installing XP on a new system for my Ladyfriend and came across 'Do not cache thumbnails' in the 'Advanced settings' of the 'View' of 'Folder options'. So I went to my machine, cleared the box, and for the last 6 hours it has been OK!

    Mark, et al ~

FWIW, I'd like to report that it was indeed the un-checking of "Do not cache thumbnails" that did the trick. I was fine for a day or two, so I put the checkmark back in for the helluvit, and yep, sure enough, it froze up (lots of images)! Un-checked it and, [i][b]
