Tab inTable toggles between docs (2000 SR1)

    Help <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15>
Withtwo docs open and containing tables, TAB toggles between the docs as opposed to moving to the next cell in the current table. CTRL Tab places tabs in a cell as expected. What have I (or one of my students) done to the settings?

It almost sounds like one of your ALT keys are stuck.

Does the switching of active windows (applications if you will) happen in any other applications that you have open at the same time?

Yes, sometimes in NT or Win95 the Alt key gets stuck -- I've seen this on dozens of machines. Bang on the Alt key a few times and it will "unstick." I have not seen this issue with Win2K or XP.

I can vouch for this happening on Both Win2K Pro and XP Pro.

It happens to me probably about twice a week on separate boxes, one Win2K and one XP.

Yes! as Van Swearingen mentions the Alt keys can get stuck. Try some 'canned air' - it's amazing the stuff that's stuck in your keyboard (or disk drives). Even if you have a rule to NOT eat or drink beverages above the keyboard, a lot of dust builds up between and under the keys and a good blast of air is the only way to clean it out. I can't remember our brand name - maybe "Air Blast".

    Patricia,

I wasn't talking about the keyboard hardware sticking -- although that is a possibility. Rather, I meant that the OS often misrecognizes the Alt key -- and that I have observed this behavior on perfectly clean keyboards where the hardware was NOT the problem because changing the keyboard didn't solve it. Banging on the Alt key a couple of times, or restarting the PC, generally clears it up.
