Re: Bizarre Document Section/Header problem - Urgent (Office 2002)

The document you posted appears to have 15 sections, but I don't see the behaviour you described. I only checked some of the headers, including sections 2 and 3.

Re: Bizarre Document Section/Header problem - Urgent (Office 2002)

You're right. There are 14 sections and 15 pages. However, the problem is occurring in the last 2 sections.

If you open the header for section 13 and highlight the header text, the header text for the last section is also hightlighted.

This is causing chaos with the users! Any help much appreciated

    Thanks, Chris

Bizarre Document Section/Header problem - Urgent (Office 2002)

    Hi,

Attached is a word document containing 14 sections. For some reason the last 2 sections seem to be somehow linked. When you click inside the header of the 13th section and highlight the text, the header text of the last section is also highlighted.

Does anybody know why this is happening? The 'Same as Previous' option has been set to false, so I am confused as to why this is happening.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks, Chris

This must be a difference between Word 2000 and Word 2002, because it seems fine to me. Maybe someone else with Office XP can try to see what happens.

Re: Bizarre Document Section/Header problem - Urgent (Office 2002)

Hi - the document is behaving as it should as far as I can tell but I've only had Office XP for a few weeks and haven't really given it a workout. I think that since
'headings rows repeat' is enabled, Word is just doing what you've asked it to do: repeat the heading row. So, when you select the header in section 13 it's also selecting the one being repeated in section 14 as Phil has noted.

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 04-Sep-02 17:58. )
Hi Chris:
This isn't much help, but I get the same results as Stuart in Word 97. I'm not familiar with Word 2002, so I don't know if it's a setting or what.

Whoops! I just duplicated your problem in Word 97 with my own table. IF your table has heading rows selected (Table/Headings) and it is pasted into a header, selecting one will select the subsequent headers. However, I can correct the problem by unchecking 'same as previous'. Are you sure that's unselcted?

Edited to reflect: I just checked in Word 2000. The Heading rows repeat has no effect in a header/footer. The behavior that you describe should only occur if the header/footer is "same as previous". I would switch it on, then off. Maybe something got corrupted...or maybe Word 2002 is different.

    Hi Patricia:
I guess we were posting at the same time. When I rechecked in Word 2000, I found that Heading rows repeat had no affect. But I don't know about Word 2002. The only thing that made a difference is whether "same as previous" was checked. Hmmm.

Re: Bizarre Document Section/Header problem - Urgent (Office 2002)

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I checked the document from my home computer last night using Word 2000, and found, as you all did, that it worked perfectly.

I checked it again this morning at work using Word XP (2002) and got the same problem.

It looks like it could be a behavioral problem in Word XP. Are there any other Word XP users out there who could test for me? If you do, and it works, can you post your Word build number and whether you use a service pack.

    Thanks for all your help

Re: Bizarre Document Section/Header problem - Urgent (Office 2002)

I observed the same problem with your document in Word 2002. It seems to lie in the last section break of the document.

I deleted the final section break, inserted a new section break, and then removed the "same as previous" setting. The document then performed as expected.

    Interesting.

Any idea why it might have been corrupted in the first place?

Also, how did you delete the last section break?

    Thanks

No idea how it would have become corrupted.

With Show/Hide on I clicked between the paragraph mark and the section break and hit delete. Nothing special.

Does anybody know whether Microsoft is aware of this problem? If not, how can I make them aware? If yes, is there an available fix?
