sorting and protection (XL 97 SR2 on Win 2000)

I locked group of cells at the top of my spreadsheet, left the rest of the sheet unlocked and then protected the sheet. OK so far, no one can mess with the info at the top any more (people will fiddle, I know I'm a paid up member of 'people').

Problem, a simple sort macro that only refers to cells in the unlocked portion of the sheet dies. I take it this is a 'feature' and the work around is to turn off the protection in the VBA code run the sort then put the protection back.

stuck (but hoping to get rich when everybody throws in their <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>)

Thank you Jan. That just about covered it. Another valuable tip about AutoFilters came from <post#=69579>post 69579</post#>

    (un)stuck (didn't get rich did I? <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15> )
