Eliminating Shutdown from the Start Menu

I once read an article that explained how to remove the Shut down selection from the Start menu. I have a network computer that needs to remain on and I do not want the user to be able to turn it off using this method. Please help.

    Thanks in advance.

The easiest way to do this is with a GPO.

Assuming that you aren't a member of a domain then you can do this with the Local Security Settings > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > Double click on shut down the system and add / remove people from the list of users who are allowed to shut down your system.

If you are logged in to a domain then your settings may be over-ridden by other people.

Not the method I remember. This technique dealt with modifying the automatic items that would appear on the start menu. This computer is a member of a domain an therefore, I don't think this original technique will work for me.

    Thanks

If you are comfortable in the registry, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer

Create a new DWORD value in this key and name it 'NoClose'.

Double-click the new value, and set its data to 1.

Then just reboot for this change to take effect. To undo this change, just delete the 'NoClose' value.

The only way you can shut the unit down now is Ctrl+Alt+Del and select 'Shut Down'.

Re: Eliminating Shutdown from the Start Menu

As long as users can use CTRL Alt DEL, why eliminate the item from the Start menu?

<IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/dunce.gif> In that environment with typical data entry or similar users, the concept is foreign.
