Restricted site icon in systray (XP Pro)

Tonight, after some browsing, foreign language content appeared in my systray as a Restricted Site icon (red circle with white crossbar). Clicking it brings up a list of items that I cannot read, along with a checkbox and an "OK" button. Everything appears to be Polish or perhaps Slavic. It is persistent - after using task manager to end it, it reappears during any web access activity. It is tied to a process called sysmd, which uses sysmd.exe. This appears to be a legitimate Windows system file. AV runs show no virus, worms, etc. What is this about and how do I get rid if it?

As a followup to my first post, Google and M$ Knowledge Base searches return no info on "sysmd.exe". It now resides in my C:Windows folder - a little scary even though it passes my AV software. I will delete it today, but if anyone knows anything about this - please let me know.

I never heard of SYSMD.EXE so I searched my XP Pro machine and don't find the file! You ought to get a copy of AdAware first (before you delete) and see if it can tell you whether this is spyware or not. You could also check Start, Run, MSCONFIG to see if the file is shown anyplace in there.

Have you right clicked on the exe to see what the version info says?

It passed AdAware ok - I'm going to delete it. Thanks.

Yes, it is listed as an "application" originating in "Windows". it gives no othre info other than a creation date of August 21, 2002. There is no version number. I've deleted it, but will keep it for a few days in my Recycle Bin in case I get other suggestions for assessing it. The deletion required me to first stop it as a process in Task Manager.

The icon appeared to contain some sexual content (origin and specifics unknown due to the foreign language) and it appeared to have been flagged in some way as a restricted site under Internet Options|Content. Very strange to receive and deal with as a persistent systray item.

Thanks for the unsettling news Bruce - dare I ask how you figured it out? I found another trace of it using RegCleaner - "SysR"="C:WINDOWSsysmd.exe m ".

    Sheesh!

Don't get that one. Could you elaborate a little?
